I was watching events unfold last night on CNN, and was amazed that the fact that the demonstration was known about in advance didn't appear to warrant any additional security.
If this is typical of security around the Capitol building, it makes you wonder what 20 religious extremists could achieve with a few grenades and a machine gun each.
Did you see that footage of the sole cop trying to fend off a dozen protestors on the stairwell? I've seen more security at a Slug and Lettuce on a Tuesday night. I used to go regularly to the first Slug and Lettuce in Islington in the 80s, before they became a nasty chain and All Bar One copycats. You wouldn't have needed ANY security back then.

That was after going to the original Patisserie Valerie for high tea, was it?

Given the amount of cameras around I guess it won't be difficult to identify the main culprits. I wonder if they will just be charged with trespass, or will the authorities be asking for the death penalty for attempted treason?I'm sure there will be legitimate demands for the application of Capitol Punishment....

Well Pat Val's was a place we frequented in Soho, but we were more often to be found in Bar Italia when non-alcoholic beverages were in order.

Congratulations. It's only the 8th of January and you've won 2021's award for the worst pun of the year! (I did laugh though).

They really, REALLY didn't send the best and brightest, did they? Hey, Alexa, I need to buy a Georgia flag... Meanwhile, the four protesters who died... 1. Shot in the neck trying to climb through a door with a whole bunch of armed security on the other side. 2. Heart attack after a flash-bang grenade. 3. Fell while scaling scaffolding. 4. Heart attack after tasering himself in the furry wrinkly undercarriage department.

Yup. But even those paramilitary-style ones were so convinced right was on their side, that many of them wore lots of things like unit badges... There's people trying very hard to identify them, and getting results...

Also for no 2, sounds like our american security friends being over zealous again. I've only heard of these grenades being deployed in strict hostage situations. I certainly couldn't image the UK deploying them at a riot.

Seems obvious that deploying to dozens or hundreds of people is likely to increase the chance of inury.

I suspect we are not looking at this as Americans, police/military used to carrying guns and vastly outnumbered and with the nation's senior poiticians depending on them to survive and failing to organise backup (so much live on this at the moment it seems that Ump's team refused to answer the phone to allow the national guard to join in for 30 minutes). They were defending not just the politicians but also their most sacred buildings (literally people mashing down the doors to their parliament building). I'm amazed there were not 150 dead people laid out there. Sargeant at arms (2 off) now sacked or resigned and one policeman hammered to death with a fire extinguisher.
