Is having some pride in your country so wrong? Why do footballers, cricketers and rugbyists strive so hard to play for their nation? Do you moaners actually enjoy anything at all about the Olympics and the best athletes of one country pitted against those of another country? Are you not moved in the slightest when they win a medal for GB (or your country of choice, perhaps the Jamaica bobsleigh team)? Qualifying to shoot for my country, donning the England team kit, and competing on the friendliest of terms against the other Home Nations on three occasions were some of the proudest and most enjoyable moments of my life. Thankfully the moaning minnies on here can never take that away. Those representing Scotland, Wales, etc, felt exactly the same.

Part of the problem is that for most of my life the flag has been associated with extreme right wing groups like nf, the bnp and so on. ...ERG... The whole problem is that being "brought together" around a flag is an inherently exclusive "them and us" thing. WE are better than YOU. Look, here's our flag to prove it! Hey the EU have a flag as well and they are always waving that about and appear to be proud of it. So they are doing this 'them and us' thing too just in a bigger way.

And so does every single EU member state. And so do most regions of most countries. Even Herefordshire has a flag now... (And, before you ask, it's a Hereford bull over the river Wye. "Bull" and "Wye" seem apposite.) And, no, I've never seen it flown anywhere. I'm not even sure it's flown over County Hall. It ain't what you got, it's what you do with it. And as soon as you make flag-hugging compulsory...

Is having some pride in your country so wrong? What's to be proud of? Slavery and colonisation? Kickstarting the industrialisation that's destroying the world? I didn't do those things, so why should I be proud of them? I didn't have a say in being born here, as opposed to anywhere else, after all. Oh - so just other bits of the same country, then? Not actually internationally, only regional? Clue: They're protesting against the hegemony of English monopoly and centuries of oppression...

They were the ultimate creme-de-la-creme. "Protesting against the hegemony".... please, do me a favour! Have you considered they might simply be enjoying their sport? Have you tried telling Wales they aren't a country? You live just down the road...I dare you!

Apparently they are allowed to fly their flags and be proud to be French, Spanish, Italian, etc and European. To be clear I'm not 'proud' to be British, but I don't think it's any worse to be British than to come from any other European country. I'm sure if I was French I would be equally happy about that.

Strange, then, that the empire and industrial revolution are the things that most commonly get pointed to as The Things That Made Britain Great.

We were slightly ahead generally in the industrial revolution, but the rest of Europe was not far behind and the outcome was inevitable. A lot of European countries had empires abroad the British Empire was eventually the most successful, but they were all in there fighting for territory.

I personally don't have much problem with this, and in England, possibly much of Wales there may not be any major issue. Northern Ireland is a bit different though and already has a load of rules about flags-does this apply there?

Report from Youngest in Kabul where the US Flag is replaced with new, every fortnight, because of dust and sh*t and PFC Wintergreen was making a tidy sum selling them on eBay, before he was ordered to stop it.

I think the flag should be shoved up the backside of all ministers who support this stupid concept.
Seriously. There are so many problems in the UK at the moment and ministers getting obsessed over flag wanking.
They are supposed to represent those who elected them. No doubt the majority that did would rather they got their priorities right.
I think those who elected them will be happy to see the British flag flying, unlike the constantly moaning lefties who are ashamed to be British and think they are ever so superior. Charlie stayt and Naga Munchetty spring to mind

Actually as far as I'm aware and this was information I was given when working for a Local Authority in England you need planning permission for a flagpole that will fly a flag other than a National Flag, therefore you need permission for fly the EU flag, but could legitimately fly the Iranian or Bermudan flag.
