held of having one fitted previously as waiting to be sure of getting SMETS 2. Had ours done today.
I am at the moment rather confused by the inhouse display. The Gas is showing xx.yyy Kwh. Fine. But the Elec is showing 0.00x Kwh. This can't be right, its as if it is out by a factor of 10^3 i.e. it should be showing 3.abc Kwh
Anyone seen this with their meter ? surprised that no instruction booklet with it, or even an easy to spot make/model number to google.

I struggle somewhat with the idea that plugging millions of these in all over the country will save electricity.

Only have SMETS 1 but it was good enough to get Octopus GO which suits us very well.

No. They replace the old meter with one that has WiFi capability to send the data to the smart meter.

It is the customer display element that seems illogical. theoretically any modern meter (yes still in meter box or under stairs etc) would be more efficient that a dated model. These plug in and draw a small amount of additional electricity take up an outlet and would be totally ignored by most people after a few days curiosity. Or with luck get unplugged and shoved in a cupboard somewhere.

Had them fitted by previous supplier. Changed my supplier at the end of last year. The electricity one works fine, but the gas one hasn't moved a digit since. 8 months of standing charge only so far..... I guess this is not my responsibility - meters are the supplier's property, not mine....

My electricity meter is in a shed thirty feet from my front door. Apparently that means I can't have a "smart" meter fitted.

I struggle somewhat with the idea that plugging millions of these in all over the country will save electricity. They are not supposed to save electricity in themselves. The idea is that when people see how much it costs to run an appliance they will use it less. Cloud cuckoo land IMO. The real reason is that once everyone has one they can introduce variable pricing, charging more at peak times.

It also offers the companies the chance to offer retail customers triad charging at which point you really will want to monitor your meters.

I struggle somewhat with the idea that plugging millions of these in all over the country will save electricity. It will save some money for providers cutting the cost of meter readers, but could also encourage some consumers to cut down on energy use. When I had them installed the engineer gave me a device that shows how much I'm spending on gas and electric in real time. I'm careful with my consumption anyway, but I thought it was a good tool to raise the awareness.

I live on my own and have always been very mean when it comes to switching lights and heating on, and I can't see a smart meter saving me any money. I must have had more than a dozen letters from my supplier urging me to get one.
In the early 1960s my boarding-school was spread over a very large campus a bell (or it may have been a series of bells) rang when electricity consumption reached a certain level. We were meant to check for any unnecessary lights and turn them off.

I struggle somewhat with the idea that plugging millions of these in all over the country will save electricity. Me too. The theory is that if people see the electricity they are using then they will use less. I don’t believe that.
