Well, a couple of staunch lefties of my acquaintance have certainly demonstrated one thing this morning...
They don't mind too much about Starmer's Labour losing, because it proves Corbyn really was the second coming.
They seem to actually be sulking about tactical voting working.

Sorry, but I can't take the Lib Dems seriously (if all the disaffected Tories had voted Labour it would be different).
Just another protest vote for a party that has been going nowhere for the last 50 years. I haven't heard Ed Davey yet, but no doub't he will be crowing about the victory. Hopefuly it won't be more cringeworthy that David Steel's 1981 Llandudno speech, or Jo Swinson's 2019 suggestion that she didn't wan't to talk about entering a coalition because she thought the Lib Dems could form the next government by themselves (and they ended up with 11 seats).

they won but total vote well down, given the Tories had a majority of 23000 last time out. By elections are well known for protest votes, But I hope it's a wakeup call. For me it's a warning to Labour that they are not seen as a party of government, and to the tories to clean up their act. Just been told by a friend that it was the fact that tories are racist and an asian candidate not winning was a clear sign of it !

Is it any different to Ribble Valley in 1991? There was a poll tax revolt and the Lib Dems won the seat. The following year at the general election it went back to the Conservatives, where it's remained ever since.

How do you get a 30000 swing ?
in 2019 35,444 voted tory, 12495 labour, 5643 lib dem in 2021 12032 Tory, 3,686 labour, 17597 Lib Dem
As I see it Tories didn't turn out as a protest and a lot of Labour switched to Lib Dem.
had it been important ( ie General election or a small overall majority in the commons ) I believe the tories would have turned out and they'd have won

That's 30000. Sure, if it really counts the English prefer self-harm over necessary change.

Tory MP convicted of defrauding his expenses, fails recall referendum. LDs win seat. Four months later, Tories win it back at GE... Depressing, isn't it? People have short memories, and cannot see past the colour of the ribbon.
