Seriously guys I'd defend their right to black up. Similar Morris (Moorish) Men . Its part of a tradition that is harmless and goes back centuries to a time when it was an adventure . We have Tippoos Tiger in the V an A ,or we did until the PC gang got hold of it . If you are offended , you have an agenda that is equally intolerant . Watching you all get huffy and sanctimonious on the behalf of goodness knows who and what is pretty sad. Every day is a 'learning day'. I had never heard of that tiger before. Interesting read for anybody who has a few minutes to spare. Double learning day today I now realise I have to identify as Cisgender, curiously a bit of knowledge that aligns with the long since redundant thread title.

I haven't seen anything saying he is the sole licensee. The article refers to him as "the landlord", and I think that is how I've seen him referenced elsewhere. There can be multiple licensees (as I'm sure you know), and it would be extremely likely that she is also a licensee. AFAIK as long as one of the licensees is available that is fine. The other could be in outer mongolia. they need to fire their proof reader. The title: what on earth is "Bacup" ? Some form of pidgin English for Blackup ? Erm, the town near Rossendale where they performed. Looks like proof reading isn't the reading issue. 😁

Isn't Elon reasonable, he changed BBC's status after an innocent mistake, what a guy...

But why do they need to? i remember the black and white minstrels it was good but the blacking up was not necessary, it would have been just as good without.

Tradition, pure and simple. Over 150 years of it. Started by Cornish tin miners and taken "oop north". It was most likely damage limitation by Musk. Major US news outlet NPR has just rage-quit Twitter, having been designated by them as "state-affiliated media". BBC News this evening suggested Musk's sudden agreement to their interview might be linked.... Musk was worried that, having erroneously designated the BBC as state-funded, they were about to follow suit. Blacking up is part of the border morris tradition, the one with sticks and tatter coats, not hankies and bells, which is Cotswold. It was done to disguise the dancers, so their masters wouldn't recognise them if they drank too much or got a bit rowdy, border morris being more likely to be more "robust" than Cotswold.. That's all. Nowadays some border morris sides have switched to a different style, such as masks or green or white paint instead of black, so as not to offend.
