This could just as easily go in the 'vid thread, but it really does deserve to be here...
Novak Djokovic, apparently a tennis player of some renown, has been allowed to enter a tournament in Australia even though he's always refused to answer questions about his vacc status. He's been given a medical exemption entry to the tournament.
Except...
Nobody asked the Aussie government... Their PM earlier said if he couldn't satisfy the requirements (proper medical proof that he cannot have the vacc), then he'd be on the next plane out.
And R4 are reporting that he's currently locked in an isolation room at the airport, without a mobile phone, and is being refused entry to the country since "I don't want one <stampy foot>" is not being deemed adequate grounds for a medical exemption visa...

I have a vague recall of the girlfriend of a tennis player 'throwing a strop' in a hotel during lockdown warranting a few pages on the covid thread. In my recall I can see kangaroos, so that must have been last years Australian open? That year slipped past a bit quick...

As indeed I posted something very similar on page 688 of that thread. Didn't realise he was there and throwing a paddy I say good for the Aussies, having rules and making even the rich and famous stick to them

Yes that looks like the one I remember.

Typical BBC. I quote from that article:
"Djokovic is due to play in the Australian Open, after being exempted from vaccination rules.
But his team had not requested a visa that permits medical exemptions for being unvaccinated."
So they are reporting he has been exempted but at the same time (the next sentence) they are saying he hasn't even requested a visa the permits medical exemptions?
Is the idea that this increases the chances of the reader staying on the page for longer in order to resolve the confusion?

The tournament organisers have exempted him from the tournament entry requirement. The government have not exempted him from the country entry requirement. Two different things.

That makes sense now you've pointed it out but at first read and without any prior information I do think most people would have been confused as I was.

Not in the news, but on TV tonight.
I was watching a programme about Allen Stanford, the jailed Texan billionaire who offered $20m in a winner takes all cricket match between England and the Windies. One of the american legal team that prosecuted him came out with a saying that may well apply to P2P;
- if you want to steal a thousand dollars you need a gun
- if you want to steal a million dollars you need a pen

Breaking news from the BBC app... Djokovic is being deported tomorrow... Couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke.
At the same tournement last year all the players had to stay in quarantine for 2 weeks on arrival. Up pops Djokovic complaining that all the playes should be able to do their quarantine in houses that have tennis courts.
PS: his dad's not very happy either.

Breaking news from the BBC app... Djokovic is being deported tomorrow... you got there before me: Novak Djokovic: Australia cancels top tennis player's visaI've made some previous comments about headline sports name have a role to play. Djokovic's behaviour's over the last 18 months have been poor (think of the tournament he organised that I'm sure most people have forgotten about). I was rather hoping that his apparent medical exemption turned out to be absolutely valid, giving some credence/explanation as to why he was refusing to say what his vaccination status was*, or, if it didn't stand up, that he was chucked out. Looks like the latter has come into play. Well done Aus. *He has of course been on record of saying he "doesn't believe in having the vaccine" so there was good chance it wasn't a consequence of reasonable medical grounds. Yes I know that one of the problems was he had the wrong type of visa, but I'm pretty sure that if he had been able to provide the right evidence to back up the granted exemption, the fact there was a screw up in the visa applicaiton would have been waived.
