Yay,absolutely, but would you rather have Dianne Abbot? please define intended meaning of 'have'. I'm about to slip off to bed, and that was not a thing I wanted to read immediately beforehand. Or have Diane in VR.

Quite. The commentary in the article is a bit lazy though... AIUI a huge part of losses come from investment in the Metaverse which - contrary to what's written - already exists in a formative state as do much the mechanics around it (and have done for well over a year). It's not as open in the UK as US yet, rough around the edges and ways and means to monetize it are being floated with varying degrees of success. The issue is that monetization relies on mass uptake - no different from early Facebook days - but this time it requires a purpose-built physical vehicle to access it, is "high-tech" costing a relatively inaccessible amount of money to produce (hardware), retail and support (system development / customer support) which is why the headsets are sold at a loss and ludicrously cheap in comparison to products of similar quality. MZ is throwing everything into this because it's a passion project. I personally average over an hour per day in VR and agree with him that it's the future of the internet, the only issue being speed of mass uptake versus the enormous start up costs before he can start cashing in. If I were a direct FB shareholder in it for the long haul I'd not be fazed by this in the slightest. Edit: this is a much better article on the subject www.nytimes.com/2022/02/02/technology/meta-facebook-earnings-metaverse.htmlI was just watching a DVD and idly giving this half an eye untilI read " I personally average over an hour per day in VR" And I wondered, what am I missing by not being up to date? Are you enjoying an hours 3D wankathon, or maybe I could interact with Michael Elphick in Private Schultz, VR edition? I'd like to modernise - please advise. Haha sorry to disappoint but a) my life's not that exciting and b) Michael Elphick died 20 years ago so can't come out to play. I use it for stuff like golf with my father from different locations during lock down, fitness (boxing gym) and last night whilst you were speculating on my personal routine I was being a total middle aged badass "restoring harmony in a godless afterlife" ( trailer link). There are plenty of meeting apps for work or leisure e.g. group events like the Mars landing, chess matches, and of course the less respectable activities such as poker etc. I am private by nature but real name and avatar are completely separated unless one decides to link them. If you have the vaguest interest in getting one, go for it!

If you have the vaguest interest in getting one, go for it! Thanks! That was indeed a serious question and now I see the attraction, having looked around the site. Low entry price for the hardware and seemingly an interesting immersive experience you can share with friends. Will my bog standard Wifi be able to support this? Entry price low, but the big drawback is surely the high "looking like a twit" factor. I'm not sure I could get over that, even with the curtains drawn. Anyone else here bought into Meta's 'vision'?

Anyone else here bought into Meta's 'vision'? I'm a lot more interested in Gibson's vision of cyberspace, and Stephenson's metaverse, than I am in Zuckerberg's attempted monetisation of what will inevitably be some kind of virtual walled garden. But somebody has to develop it, and it will need an awful lot of work to get within touching distance of the vision of Gibson / Stephenson. I did try an Occulus Rift a few years back. Parts of the simulation were excellent. Parts really suffered from fidelity issues that completely undermined it. It'll come, in time. Just have to hope that the CCP / Nadine Dorries / whoever you pet bete noir is don't crush any and all freedom for creativity.

I suffer from motion sickness, which makes the current generation of VR hardware pretty much unusable for me. Tried it once and promptly puked my guts out

I used to have a landlord who worked for the offshore safety bit of the HSE. They were using VR headsets in rig evacuation drills... in the early 90s.

A bulletin board is VR
3D head sets just add the immersion.
"Meta" is already there: 3D multiplayer games, VRchats, Meeting apps, applications where you can design your own "living" space (like recroom).
During lockdown I've burned hundreds of calories a day playing beat saber; virtual workout better than the bike.
It's not stoppable anymore and will only become better. Gesture controlled, better resolution, lighter headsets, faster more realistic animation.
MZ isn't the only driver either; he's just claimed the thing trying to get ownership.

Asda has promised to stock its budget ranges in all 581 supermarkets and online after complaints from a female anti-poverty campaigner called Jack!

Bruno Guimaraes: Newcastle's new signing believes club will become a big power in world football.
All this found wisdom coinciding with an increase in salary. He's not in Saudi Arabia, he's free to tell the truth.

I am far more likely to take advice from a woman called Jack than one called Destiny or Ocean or Khalisi or whatever. I met my friend's wife, a primary schoolteacher in the High Street recently, festooned with children as usual. When she called out their names to tell them to behave, I nearly fell off the kerb.

Peaches and Fifi Trixibelle?
Wonder what Hughie would have made of it all?
