It would be nice if either cabinet had some scientists, rather than historians, lawyers, journalists, shop stewards and pro-politicians Pub quiz time. Who was the first UK Prime Minister with a science degree?

Who was the first UK Prime Minister with a science degree? It was, apparently, her proudest achievement... As well as all those stereotypical jobs, the cabinet currently contains people who've been in the military, worked as economists, in PR, accountants, chartered surveyors, as well as working in family businesses and setting up companies from tent-hire to publishing to childcare. And people with science degrees and doctorates. Their previous careers are absolutely no guide to their (in)competence in government...

One of the recent Business ministers came out of Local government and before that was a time served elctrician in a brewery and he doesn't understand the difference between green hydrogen and blue hydrogen. Another claims a sciencish university degree from Oxford Brookes University, but wasn't present when it was a University. In upright countries they sack ministers for plagerising their PhDs. I suspect this is also true of Labour party and SNP senior people. It is just the habit of improving their CV that they think is normal and could get you sacked in the private sector.

TBF, I spent three years in a building with "polytechnic" on the front, took my finals on paper with "polytechnic" on the top, and got a degree certificate that said "university" on it, because it changed that summer. Those who were in the years ahead of me were entitled to swap their certificates, IIRC. If I were knocking a CV up now, I'd probably put the Uni name on. The institution has borne that current name for 50% longer than the name it bore when I was there.

Not giving the first flying tosserigar about sport, I have to ask those who are footie fans whether they actually find any pleasure in watching such an unequal match...? (see also: Ingurlan' 10 : Somebody's Back Garden In Northern Italy 0 the other week)

Context is everything. Womens football is new in terms of people caring about it and it having a structure of competitive games, so it's inevitably better developed in some places than others. England to its credit has supported womens' football so it's clearly in a pretty good state. That seems not to be true of the poor old Latvians. But if in the Ashes, England were to beat Australia by an innings in each test to finish with a 5-0 thumping, all England fans would be thrilled and love every moment, because it's usually them doing it to us.

(see also: Ingurlan' 10 : Somebody's Back Garden In Northern Italy 0 the other week) Not just the fans but surely also the players, after how many goals do you stop celebrating because it is getting embarrassing. I love football (not so much at the moment with the run Everton are on) and the fact that there is always a chance of an upset in the top European leagues is what makes them great. International football is a whole different ball game and the tiered system should be extended to all European qualifying matches in my opinion.
