Check debit / credit card security settings. Not all cards have verified by VISA or similar enabled. Disable your debit / credit card to protect idle accounts.

Good advice never changes, don't keep a lot of money in current accounts with a debit card and don't accept any from banks when they don't believe you and won't refund, just mention Lazarus and North Korea.

My recent experience with a high street bank wasn't fantastic. Reported "unauthorised" ££ debit card transactions for but the team member didn't submit the fraud report and I had to make a complaint to get it resolved. 100 mins wasted on the phone, £50 to make things "right" and still awaiting refund from fraudulent transactions. The worse part, they refuse to admit any data breach nor poor security.

Keeping on the theme of banks are useless:
Was playing golf last week and received a text message from Santander saying they had detected an attempted log in to my account from a new device, and asking me to click on a link to secure my account. I didn't recall logging on that day, but the text message wasn't clear who it had come from (other than saying it related to my Santander account). I didn't click the link in the message, instead waiting until I got home before phoning the bank.
They said if I could access my account everything was fine, but they were unable to confirm whether they had sent me a text message earlier in the day.

Reading it you get a sense of just how much crime is enabled by these types of websites. Never any mention of jail time for those arrested, just another entry in their previous criminal record for most. Changing important passwords regularly and using 2FA is crucial and worth the effort.

I actually thought the VAT people were on the ball compared to HMRC. It's like the HMRC and VAT offices are surprised and shocked and had no idea it's been going on since online marketplaces were invented. No evidence of fraud has been found so far, really ? No wonder there is so much fraud with such incentives as lack of resources, minimum jail time and apathetic recovery of assets.

Although you do need to wonder about people investing hundreds of thousands of pounds on the basis of assurances given by people that run the company. One born every minute, or is that being too harsh

LOL I know a postie in that area he said some days the "frame" for that area was full of letters from HMRC / VAT and that they were put into a separate cardboard box rather then the normal bag

Another dodgy investment scheme bites the dust. You see lots of people promoting investment in vintage whisky, and this guy appears to have done it on the cheap (albeit in a very sucessful way). Good news is last week he appeared in court in the US and admitted carrying out the biggest whisky scam the world has ever seen. The 26-year-old now faces up to 20 years in jail.

Just had a (genuine) email from Amazon:
"Our customers helped us take the fight to scammers last year by reporting suspicious, emails, texts, and phone calls. Each report matters. In 2022, we made significant strides to protect our customers:
We initiated takedowns of more than 20,000 phishing websites and 10,000 phone numbers that were used as part of impersonation scams. We referred 100s of bad actors across the globe to law enforcement to help them ensure these scammers are held accountable."
