Just had an email purportedly from AOL (yes, I'm still using it) advising that "The Classic Version of AOL Mailbox will be replaced by our new version from January 19th. So, it's time to verify your Mailbox before you lose access to your account. Log-in Restore
Notice: Ignoring this message will cause your E-mail to be terminated without your permission."
I did hesitate before concluding that it was a scam email.

If it had been genuine you would have had a lot more than 2 days notice

Subject: New message on NHS Portal From: <suroorhussain@hamon.in>
NHS England
Generate your new Green Pass (Booster dose)
Watch out for this one as it evaded all the scam filters and ended up in my inbox. When is the government going to man up and deal with these vermin.

If you still need convinced that financial fraud isn't treated or prosecuted as a crime in this country then keeping reading. Everyone is just sitting ducks waiting to be scammed by predators who have nothing to lose and whose chances of being caught or prosecuted are nil. You've more chance of going to jail for killing a pigeon or seagull.

A very simple example to follow of how easy it is to infect your computer with malware and viruses just from a seemingly harmless CSV text file and in this case choosing wrong options in any security warning popups ?
Malicious CSV text files used to install BazarBackdoor malware

Among a string of recommendations, MPs also said the government should consider whether to make big technology companies liable to pay compensation when people are tricked by con-artists using their platforms.

Hmm. Would that include the government being liable where the individuals in question have changed details on the government's own websites in order to persuade people to part with money...?

Private Parking fines.
Another scam in sheep's clothing hopefully has its days numbered. Even the photograph on the BBC website is showing a private parking ticket using the word Penalty charge, I thought that was already illegal. It's job creation and unregulated revenue generation. I don't understand why more councils don't provide this service as I'm sure their own legal operation is profitable and they are always complaining about lack of money.
In Scotland , you would be hard pushed to find many non-payments that reach the courts as the parking firm needs physical proof that you were the driver. It's never been a problem for me but I still get a demand for payment from over 5 years ago and I have a valid ticket, believe it, a perfect example of their sadistic pursuit of people.

The Beeb photo is just a generic stock image from Getty's library...
I had one a while back - paid and displayed, but didn't read the machine properly. I put in the three letters from the reg, instead of the full reg - our local ones just want the three letters. Two days later, letter with photos and £100 request. I'd kept the P&D ticket... and they reduced it to £20. On advice, that was likely the best I was going to get, so I paid it.
