VAR has got the right idea at last. Huge sigh of relief from UEFA but one night less in luxurious hotels discussing what to do as if there was anything to discuss. F1 is surprisingly showing unselfish leadership for others to follow.
"Russian side Zenit St Petersburg had a last-minute goal disallowed by the video assistant referee as they were knocked out of the Europa League by Real Betis."
Never mind that, stuff* just got real. eurovision.tv/mediacentre/release/ebu-statement-russia-2022 No Russians in this year's Eurovision. So they have about the same chance of wining as us?

I don't blame Ukraine for it one bit, but I can't help feeling that the arming of civilians is going to make this even more of a tragedy . Yes. Indeed. But I wonder how many pictures of Ukrainian civilians bracing themselves to 'resist' will manage to filter back to citizens of Russia, and their senior military. The message that Ukrainians are being 'liberated' might start to look a bit less truthful. What a bloody tragic mess.

I don't know, Putin hasn't, yet, managed to lockdown the whole of the internet in Russia. Even then... eg a friend of mine just received this (seriously ******* sobering) message from a colleague over Slack:-
"Hi **** Me and family are fine at this moment, we are still in Kharkiv, preparing to fight and defend.
Thanks for your concern!
Regards,
****"
I'd imagine there are lots of similar conversations going on between people in Ukraine and Russia, many via routes Putin can't control.

Putin is staring down the barrel at total Russian collapse and isolation and if insane is capable of anything. I'm wondering what Nicola Sturgeon is going to say next about removing the Nuclear deterrent from Scotland and that everyone should put their hands in the air instead?

I should add: anyone, let alone an untrained civilian, who picks up an AK47 with real intent to stand up to the Russian military machine has a far larger set of cojones than I could muster. I guess one never knows how one will react when your way of life that you cherish is under existential threat, but my god.

Don't laugh, but once back in the day, a socialist Danish MP proposed that their defence budget should total no more than the cost of an ansaphone message saying 'We Surrender', in Russian.

Putin will be deposed if this drags on. The invasion is being sold as liberation from an artificial country run by nazis, and "Russian tanks are being greeted with flowers in their gun barrels" according to the Russian Parliament spokesman. If this is wrong, it will be evident within the week.

Putin will be deposed if this drags on. Bit of a vacuum of alternatives, though. Dictators rarely do much succession planning, and since opposition is not exactly encouraged...

Some nasty videos circulating on various Ukranian twitter feeds showing what hits from weapons like NLAWs do to armored vehicles. Crew cooked alive etc.
What can a militia with AK-47s do against the might of the Russian army? Not a lot
What can a militia with modern US anti-tank and anti-air infantry weapons do against the might of the Russian army? Thats a different question

The hilarity of Eurovision's excuse for not expelling Russia. It is a non-political cultural event. So that's why British bands and artists have dominated world music, certainly every country in Eurovision, for decades and yet they finish last every year.
I'm assuming full tonto actually refers to the lone ranger which is a neat summation. He's now threatening Finland and Sweden not to even dream about joining NATO. If he threatens to harm US assets or citizens, isn't he is legally considered a terrorist? We've seen what that means in the past.

Civilians with AK47s are the most fearful enemy of a modern army, whether in street fighting or in hit and run attacks. Russia does not have enough troops to hold down the country if it turns out that the Ukranians will actually fight rather than welcoming them. It is one thing to park your tanks in the main square of the capital, but another in full view of the media to apply the necessary degree of terror to the population to discourage partisan attacks on your supposedly popular army. The Ukranians have Nationalist form, both after WW1 and later, contrary to what Putin likes to believe:- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_Insurgent_Army

OK this is the first thing about this entire situation that's actually made me laugh - apparently Pornhub has blocked all Russian users, presenting them with a Ukrainian flag and a message of support for Ukraine .

Putin has already declared war on the world. He's on a tightrope, one major incident away from poking the US bear! I can't see even China supporting him.
From Twitter:
"A friend is stuck on a BA plane at Heathrow. “Massive DDOS attack on website, check-in down, Terminal 5 systems down and boarding flights manually, pilot loading calculation system down, stand approach systems down, and the crew say they can't access any BA private systems”.
