You make a good point about Covid. Covid take-up in Russia in general has not been high ~50% uptake by adults but Putin sees and said that he sees Omicron as a natural solution to Covid. Having 100,000 troops in the field all together at least gets them cleared of Covid, especially after the Russian vaccine that they offered free to the world early-doors, neither got to the world early on as it had major production issues nor seems to have worked very well but evidence seems to suffer from the old Russian problem (honest uncertainty).
I think Covid take-up in Russia has been particularly high, partly because of poor vaccine takeup or possibly poor vaccine But on a serious note, it would not surprise me if vaccination in the deployed forces has been enforced. I may be wrong. Is there actually evidence that the Russian vaccine(s) are not terribly effective ? I know there appears to be evidence that is the case with the primary Chinese one (based on amount of infection in non-china countries where it was used initially).

One thing that worries me - can Putin stand down? No - not without being thrown a fairly substantial bone. I think he wants Ukraine, period. NATO is not gong to make a statement that no eastern european country will ever be allowed to join NATO even if that is their sovereign will. And that is probably the only fig leaf remaining. I'm personally keeping my fingers crossed that global warming keeps the ground a soft muddy morass for the next few months. Until the weather is warmer, europe is less dependant on russian gas at least for another 5-6 monthes, and as a consequence having his gun cocked and loaded but not otherwise actually doing anything causes it to all be stood down. I am not holding my breath, it must be said.

Very sadly, I see there are now reports that Russia is now moving medical units up. That seems like a very strong indication that Putin has entered the end game and is going to make a move fairly soon. I feel very sorry for Ukrainians on the front line right now.

Putin would prefer a damaged Ukraine than a functioning Ukraine. He needs ruined countries around his to make him feel safe and make his people feel that their lives are better than what they can see.

Or the soldiers are in such poor conditions, they need medical assistance, so are in no place to invade anywhere... I can't imagine the Russian-Ukrainian border is a lovely place to go camping in January, with 100k of your nearest comrades.

The lack of medical units / field hospitals was the final indicator that they weren't yet ready. Looks like they will soon have that.

According to the Russian researcher from BBC Monitoring interviewed on R4 yesterday, Russian domestic news is packed with reports that the Ukrainans have "gone mad" (his words), and that Ukraine plans to attack in the Donbass and Russia will be forced to respond. A brief look at Google and reports of this sort are not hard to find. tass.com/world/1394379If this is all just sabre rattling, what Putin will achieve is to turbo-charge his biggest customer's efforts to transition away from his country's main export products, while setting back Russian relations wth Ukraine for decades.

The West is financially bankrupt, it cannot afford to go to war. If China joined with Russia we would be in trouble.
