We've just had a 9 day outage on our BT fibre (to the property, no street cabs out in this corner of the sticks). Half of the village was out.
Small problem... We have no mobile signal*. And many people have already been moved to digital voice, so no landline, either. Including one neighbour who was moved over to digital voice without any forewarning, during the outage! And, no, they refuse to even consider moving anybody back to copper, even though it's still physically there - "policy".
The rumour is that the delay in fixing it was down to Openreach insisting on the council giving permission for traffic management to allow them to close the main A-road while they did the work. And the council said no. Why would they say no? Because there's temporary traffic lights there already.
And when I say "temporary", they've been there since Feb 2020, when Storm Dennis caused half of the road to subside towards the river...
<sigh>
This country really is falling to bits rapidly.
* - If ever you want a laugh, try explaining that to a BT call centre... Every bloody day. "No, you can't text me a PIN to confirm my identity. You want to know the date and amount of my last DD to prove my identity instead? Umm, hold on while I check my online banking. Oh, wait.** Yes, I received the 4G mini hub you sent to keep me online - but, no, it doesn't work. Yes, the coverage map does say we have good signal, but it's lying. No, you can't SMS me updates on the outage."
** - I'm very glad the security is so strict. I'd hate for any unauthorised person to maliciously check on whether there's any update to the fault.

I thought it had gone a bit quiet round these parts I have just very recently (last month) moved to the only fibre to the home supplier where I am. My speed went from 60/20 to 900/900 but generally and as expected haven't noticed any difference. The reason I did it was because I thought reliability would go up as was fed up with A/ Dealing with two companies (ISP and BT Openreach) and B/ I was thinking burried new fibre might be more future proof. Touch wood, but I have to say especially from reading your experience I'm glad my company is a tiny one as I would imagine (hope) any issues would be taken pretty seriously by them as their survival depends on not too many folk like me have a good experience.

Where it's an actual physical infrastructure fault, the only difference between resellers (inc BT retail) is the attitude of the person on the phone, and the size of the bill. OpenReach do all the grubby bits, in their own sweet time. The resellers can scream at OpenReach as much as they like, it'll make no difference. Unless, of course, it's one of the new private suppliers like wot this thread started about. Then it's closed shop, same as cable TV used to be. Buy their fibre from them, or don't.

And on Trustpilot only 16% say they are total sh*t.
Fast forward just over 2 years and more men have appeared outside my house. Apparently Virgin Media are going to install a duct in the footpath for their FTTP system. I pointed to the scar in the footway where the Airband duct had been installed and asked why they don't share than one. They just shrugged their shoulders and walked off.

It sounds like Virgin Media doesn’t want to pay OpenReach a dime using optical cable hanging on those old telephone poles. Community Fibre uses existing telephones poles for FTTP installation. They are CF own cables, but have to pay BT Openreach for hanging the cables on the poles.

Make sure they have planning permission, I wouldn't put anything past Virgin.
