Yet another decision by the press to decide to tell us what is important and what isn't. So what if an MP has a flutter. I would say its only a serious issue, if he or she stood to gain many thousands and/or took steps to conceal it. Insider information like date of election does not set a good example but if gambling commission rules haven't been broken then presumably they haven't been cheating like that. In other words lets distinguish between having a flutter and cheating. Hes bet on an outcome which he himself can directly influence ... therefore by definition has inside knowledge. No different to a footballer betting on scoring an own goal. in principle this is true, and why it is wrong. In practise, I suspect it is somewhat different, and more a case of a "bit of a laugh" flutter rather than an attempt to manipulate the system and deprive the general public of betting on a "fair game". Especially as he is unlikely to deliberately throw it and lose out on the salary and pension gravy train of being an MP vs an alternatve prize which most likely is considerably less rewarding. so to that extent I have a little bit of sympathy with the Labour guy - Craig ? On the other hand, the base principle in play - don't bet on yourself failing in the job you're meant to be doing - and the whole public "optics", and how that impacts his party, are so blindingly obvious that it shows a level of rank stupidity/lack of common sense/lack of responsibility. On those grounds alone Labour's actions are justified.

But not £8,000.

ah, I was completely unaware of the quantum.
May still have been "a bit of a laugh" but even if so the message it sends is either one or both of:
- I am sufficiently loaded that sticking £8k on a bet is trivial to me - I have a gambling problem
see earlier comments about optics, especially for a labour candidate.

8k bet? 🤔
That would trigger all the alarm bells in betting control unless he’s a regular betting £££££ every bet.
Betting shop is not a bet supermarket, no one can just place a bet and expect the bookie will accept it.
If he did it on the exchange. and there was enough money for the appetite, I suspect GC may not even aware of it.
Betting exchanges, unliked bookies, they don’t dive a damn who wins. They get paid for a small cut for matching the bets. simple
So, it seems our MPs don’t know anything about betting / arbing on betting exchanges.

Not sure if that isn't a good thing. and for example for a long time you could bet on Varadker wearing novelty ( aeroplane or elephant, I can't remember which ) socks. it would be easy to get one of his children to pick them up as a fathers day / Christmas present. There are facebook groups that try to influence things such as the Christmas number 1 and yes a stragetically placed "lay all" bet on the GE would give you 1 losing bet and a host of winners

Yeah but that's why we should be distinguishing. Firstly the amounts do matter although 8K to many of the Tories isn't a huge amount and a perfectly reasonable flutter so I'm not sure. But surely any bet less than £99 should be considered a flutter without any further thought. Secondly, I definitely don't agree that betting against yourself is somehow worse than betting on yourself to win. Its a not a boxing match you can easily throw and having a "consolation prize" doesn't seem unreasonable. Finally, reading this and reading the press it really does seem like it most disagree with me and think this is morally repugnant or similar. I just can't get myself worked up about it somehow.

From one of the audience did either of them respond to that ? Even if only on behalf of the other, one serious question, how come no major party candidates deflect to Reform UK? is it because no one can work with Mr Farage? is he unapproachable?

one serious question, how come no major party candidates deflect to Reform UK? is it because no one can work with Mr Farage? is he unapproachable? Apart from an ex-deputy chair of the Conservative party? There's various other ex-Tories, including at least one former shadow-cabinet member and at least one other ex-MP, heavily involved with Reform at various levels - from Welsh and Scottish assemblies to party spokespeople...

IIRC, I picked up the £8k figure from Sky News last night.
But I did not check and I am not surprised to find that I have failed the adrianc test.
Mea culpa

I have just switched off the telly and walked away.
Sky News has just had a reporter explaining where the leaders have been campaigning during the day. Unfortunately, no-one briefed her on the places on the map so she was reduced to stabbing wildly at the map whilst trying to remember who was where.
I am off to the bottom of the garden (no map required) to commune with nature...

Is this the beeb's best attempt to stop the demolition of the Tories and bring us all back to some kind of happy status quo? The racist at the centre of this wasn't even quoted and you have to go to The Guardian or elsewhere to find out who the person was. It seems to be TWO seperate "canvassers". That is 2 people of out thousands and I can attest to the fact (I've said it before somewhere on these boards) that many Tory activitsts are also racist - at least 5 of them including a councillor are where I live. But no, lets keep Farage in check..... Attachments:
