There's been chatbots doing first-cut customer service for years. But, when it comes to the kind of low-end first-rung customer service that could be replaced by "smarter" chatbots, aren't most of those jobs (including BT) already offshored to script-driven call centres in the subcontinent...? Indeed but they are hardly chatgpt quality.

Yes sadly not chat box quality ,but that's not their fault. No technical training required just read the screen tell the customer to do what the screen says, do not deviate. Friend of mine got a job to fill in in this role between jobs, but had extensive background. Just got in trouble for not following the screen, gave up and did has he was told. Sometimes knew the problem and could have advised solution in minutes but ground on with the process, often leaving the problem unresolved because the screen did not provide the correct solution. Skilled people cost more , training costs more, the system is ment to cost less and cannot be seen to fail at any cost

BT to cut 55,000 jobs with a fifth replaced with AI
Hopefully my BT.A shares will go up then ........ Here here, I second that .... I must check what my BT shares are going to give me this period. I hate paying tax on dividends even more so now they are reducing the tax free amounts.

For a long time now I've always used the best method of controlling where you get through to. Just keep getting cut off - most systems usually monitor the number of cut off attempts and poke one through to UK call centres as a last resort. Well BT still do - I think! Mind you things may changed in recent 2/3 years now that one cannot even get through to the front ends. The cut off attempt do still register even if no one answers - again they used to perhaps they are getting more savvy to these things.

i had my first encounter today with chatgpt... ask it simple straight forward questions, and it it surprisingly honest, on a number of subjects... i did question the bot previous , with the same questions, minus the "please answer yes or no" and got a whole load of guff about peoples feelings and gender and respect and how we should view the world..... but i was more than content to deal with the bot directly. proper refreshing.

as opposed to dumb humans.
My partner has had her phone switched from PSTN to via the Router this week.
yesterday she spotted all her recordings were missing from the Virgin box, so she rang to get help.
CS advisor tells her to reboot router, she explains it will disconnect call and he says no landline telephones still work if Router off. So she turns router off and guess what, it disconnected the call, just as she had anticipated. I do think they need to give everyone particularly the elderly a small UPS to keep the router up in the event of a power failure.
oh and as an aside Virgin have tried to charge her for the converter to plug phone into the router, that's cheeky they want us to B) do the work of reconnecting and B) pay for it

Yes it get's more like the millennium bug every day. I would not worry. That really would have been a huge problem without the massive amount of time and effort expended on preventing it. We won that one - and that's why it now gets downplayed so much.
