So having looked after my teeth at the age of near 70 ,still got the lot. Also living in Dorset the land of the free, well dam near nhs dentist free, about 10 years ago I had to go private, denplan thing. Over the last few years never see the same dentist twice in the practice but more and more hygienists taking longer and longer mainly offering additional services , teeth whitening ect. Got an appointment in 2 weeks, but they do not have a dentist available can still see the hygienist. So I ask for a dentist appointment when ones available. No , they eventually admit, do not have a dentist full stop and have no idea when they may be able to attract one. Now the gp practice has been trying to find new gps for about 5 years without success, so wonder when I will see a dentist!.

Maybe the government grand plan is that we all eventually lose our teeth, that way they can be posted to a call centre for repair. Upside is when you experience poor customer service, if they ever answer your call, they wont understand what your saying anyway thru gummy conversation

If you have friends in another area you can use their address and see a dentist where they are. I have a neice who lives in Wales who travels to the Midlands for nhs dental treatment. Actually alot of Dentists accepting NHS patients by me. Not that i am in Devon....

Grim reading this and finally seems to be picked up as an issue in the national news.
As with Doctors/Nurses the long term fix is to train more of them. I hope the government's package they announced recently to train more docs includes dentists?
Along with GP practices they could also do with upgrading where dentists work. Doesn't give me much confidence going into a converted semi-detached house.

The only surprise at this morning's "90% of practices aren't taking new NHS patients" headlines was that 10% are. Gawd knows where. Last time I looked there was one or immediately around this county that was - and they had a reputation that explained it.

My dentist , Dr Abbas of Church Stretton is a whizz . He travels in from Wolverhamton everyday (an hour's journey) and has brought with him an iranian carneval of similar staff ,to dilute this stolid mercian backwater . Still NHS . Yeah ,I know,I'm just boasting because I'm tall with well nurtured teeth.

I had been unable to get a dentist in England for over 10 years, When I moved to the Welsh Valleys I got an appointment for assessment within 2 weeks of going on waiting list. Got a first regular NHS appointment a couple of weeks after that and have been seen every 4-6 months since.
Possibly different to many down here I can afford the nearly £50 NHS charge

Should dental practrices be needed urgently on our high streets, why not ask amazon.. im sure they would have them up and running in a matter of months... yes we would have to pay.. but (lets say) £75 for an absyss sorted is cheap IMO.

All the dentists within reasonable distance of me are Indian. I last checked a few months ago and around 20 practices were all Indian led with the vast majority employing Indian dentists only. Not sure why that is. I was surprised there are no eastern european dentists nor of course british. I've had good experiences from the former.

The thing that upsets me is that me and my wife are private, paying a monthly fee to a practice that has no and seems unable to employ a dentist to do anything . If we cannot run a private surgery in Dorset how are we going to provide any nhs service.

The thing that upsets me is that me and my wife are private, paying a monthly fee to a practice that has no and seems unable to employ a dentist to do anything . If we cannot run a private surgery in Dorset how are we going to provide any nhs service. I hate to say it, but there is possibly an issue with the practice, or the location. The lack of NHS services is considerably due, as I understand it, to the paucity of the payments for treatments* The practice I am with seems to be ever expanding in terms of dentists on the books, and physical space. Yes they are also offering an ever increasing range of cosmetic options, and not just for teeth. But nonetheless they are expanding. Some of their dentists are specialists that may only do a few days a month, and some of their previous near full time are doing less at the practice because they are also doing specialist work elsewhere. But that seems like a good thing to me, and would seem to be indicative of a professional business which encourages continual professional development. They do NHS work, but I know have now closed their books to new NHS clients (as I overhead a reception phone conversation). *This may not be the conclusion of the report, which I have not read. It was the "rationale" that I often saw bandied around by dentists bodies prior to the report, as far as I can recall.

It must be a Dorset thing, just had an email from the vet. No out of hours emergency cover from Sunday., can not get vets to cover as short staffed and unable to attract new blood. Cover will be given from Axminster or Bournemouth both about a 70 mile round trip.
