House and Roof checked over
I have a good balance on my electricity account that I will be withdrawing and using to buy an additional battery to ensure I get through most days on cheap overnight import.
I need to replace the kitchen extractor fan with one that will stop drafts coming in.
get the boiler serviced shortly, it's always cheaper before heating season starts
get winter duvet cleaned, although I wonder about this, £15 a year to clean it a new one about £50

- check the price of exotic winter holidays to SE Asia
- check golfing waterproofs dont have any holes in them
- work out what to do with angel trumpets that are too big to fit in the greenhouse over winter.

- Make sure Boaty is properly staffed after the debacle last year (no hairdresser on board)
- Check none of the passports expire next year

Ah yes sweep chimney Forgot about that. Might as well take log burner out too and check for cracks etc. Looks like a busy few months ahead.

Also wondering if foraging for winter sox is a typo?

For all you log burners I assume you also gather pine cones as they make great firelighters, Someone local to me gathers them, dips them in melted wax and sells them at what works out at 25P each

Dipping pine cones... superb idea and very entrepreneurial. Even although I like to squirrel a bit away, I'm not that careful that I could be bothered doing that. Ok if you ate retired but I'm still in full time work. Hence I feel I can afford a quid for a box of fire lighters. However, one can never stash too many logs, this year I've been very lazy and guess I only have 2 m2 of wood. I need 8 to 10. Winter duvet and sox are ready. Hopefully it will be a mild one.

I moved into a new place last year, and it was freezing over winter; turns out the builders that converted the barn back in 1990 didn't bother to insulate the roof.
I have chopped a hole in the celling for a hatch and am currently laying out 300mm of fibreglass blankets in the crawl space. Next job is insulating the vaulted bit of the roof and the inside of the 'cavity' wall. (I'm thinking the insulation boards that have plasterboard preattached to the front might be a good option...)

especially the one with a silver foil bit wasn't that a breach of standards even back then
I assume you have an insulated hatch. Mine is insulated but still let drafts through I have run expanding foam round the edges, and I have 2 Old Pillows in Bin Bags that I laid over the top, that has made a surprising difference. Held in place with Duct tape, it's not pretty but does the job

Yes, probably a breach of building regs but done over 30 years ago so not much I can do about it now besides insulate to modern standards! The EPC only says they assume the roof is insulated (There was no access until I cut the hole), so that's another government initiative not worth the paper it is written on
The new hatch has 100mm of polystyrene attached and rubber seals, plus i'm planning to bury it under a top layer of loft roll as I won't need access again.

I moved into this house a few years ago. The estate agent told me that the loft was insulated by a reputable local company.
At least, that is what the 2 little old ladies living there told the estate agent.
My surveyor told me that, as far as he could see, the loft was insulated.
Yeah, right.
The "reputable company" had placed 200mm insulation between the joists closest to the hatch and used 10mm (yes, that much!!) of insulation just rolled across the joists for the rest of the loft.
Two little old ladies were not about to climb into the loft and check the workmanship, were they?
Tucked into the gap between the oil tank and the wall, I found a diary of oil receipts that showed 4 or 5 deliveries of 800 litres of oil per annum.
That winter was cold. But I burned the calories insulating the whole loft to a minimum of 400mm. Hard work and I learned, and scratched, a lot.
I now burn roughly 1600 litres of oil per annum.
