Thought I'd plagiarise the title from another thread. Prompted by the latest instalment of "Party with a greater than 80 seat majority couldn't organise a p**s up in a brewery (but can organise many in 10 Downing Street)"

It really sums up the state of the UK when a government with collapse at every level of public service, the funds for any future restoration of such blown away on a token tax cut, and their entire concentration is on exporting some 200 unfortunates per year on an aeroplane at the cost so far of £240m

There were two close votes last night. votes.parliament.uk/votes/commons/division/1691 - 313 for (308 con, 5 ex-con indie), 270 against, abstentions (inc 37 con, 3 ex-con indie, 1 ex-con reform) votes.parliament.uk/votes/commons/division/1690 - 269 against, 336 against (330 con, 5 ex-con indie, 1 ex-con reform), abstentions (inc 15 con, 3 ex-con indie) They were so rattled they even flew the climate minister back from Dubai just for the vote... www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-humber-67694420

Welsh Govt Announcement wasn't much better, but at least they didn't change tax rates. the hefty reduction in Business rate support will hurt the Welsh economy A businessperson thinking of setting up near the border will be pushed towards England

I'd FAR rather higher-earners paid a little more tax and we got better public services. Tax is the price you pay for living in a civilised society. I'm really not sure the Scottish rate change is the end of the world.

I'd FAR rather higher-earners paid a little more tax and we got better public services. I thought the amount of money raised by raising the top level of income tax was a trivial amount compared to overall spending. Far better to make the black holes in society (like the NHS, benefits system) more efficient.
I was in Hillingdon A & E department a few weeks ago at around 6pm. There were 2 men there who had been arrested and were each accompanied by 3 police officers. Neither were causing any trouble, yet the 3 officers had to sit with them for 5 hours while they chugged their way through the system being checked out by medical staff (before being taken down the station for questioning). And people ask why there are no bobbies on the beat!

Spot on. Waste less tax less. Encourage business investment. Promote growth. Get folk back into work.ise what we have more efficiently Cant be that hard its seems basic economics to me.

Exactly, get rid of overheads and dead wood
Wales as an example has 22 county Boroughs and unitary authorities just over 3 million residents
that's 1 authority per 150,000 people
England has 333 of which 180 are second tier so 150 and 55 million residents so England is 1 per 300,000 residents
my own Authority has 69000 residents and 30,000 households and 33 councillors each on a minimum £17,600 $580,000 or nearly £20 a year per household in Councillors salaries, then you have chief execs and other senior staff on in excess of £100,000 a year
