just reading an thought inevitable is a nice word but do we ever use evitable ( just like we use invincible but never vincible ) The word exists, but it's redundant. My interpretation is that with inevitable the thing in question is unavoidable, so the emphasis is on what we do about that thing. With evitable, the thing in question is avoidable, so the emphasis is on whether we want it to happen, or avoid it, or whatever which renders saying / using it unhelpful. talking of which, the election was hardly an innocuous event, but would another outcome have been "nocuous" ? It seems unlikely. Which is interesting, because its a case where we have retained the negative rendering of the latin root word, but not the root itself. Apparently.

I imagine our Trade Secretary is already on top of this, no doubt discussing the UK's most diplomatic response with David Lammy as we speak. Give Trump Farage as US ambassador that will keep him sweet.

USA needs to utilize its natural resources, especially Oil and Coal to get out of the giant debt hole it is in. Problem with the climate change agenda is it is going to be ignored by most of the world who are more concerned about improving the living standards of their populations and dont give a damn what the eco-religionists think. The green agenda along with its anti-russia policy has already destroyed Germany, and hence destroyed the EU. If Labour were actually socialists and not globalist nut jobs they would be trying to reopen the coal mines to provide cheaper energy for the UK population and business. For countries with temperate climates like the UK, Global warming is actually a positive.

For countries with temperate climates like the UK, Global warming is actually a positive. Wrong on all counts. I know it's a waste of time debating with you, but I will just make a few observations. 1. The US has many other options. Balancing the budget would be a start, but I don't expect Trump to do that. 2. Some parts of the world (eg Russia) may be happy to let it burn, but China is well on board with the climate change agenda as you call it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_change_in_China#:~:text=China's%20government%20is%20taking%20some,to%202022%20levels%20by%202030. India has been slower to get on board, but is well aware of how catastrophic climate change will be for the country. It is moving in the right direction and will get there - albeit late. 3. Neither Germany nor the EU have yet been destroyed, despite the best efforts of populists on both right and left. 4. Reopening the coal mines would be a terrible idea, on economic grounds alone. Solar and wind are already cheaper than coal, and getting cheaper. Moreover, UK coal would be very expensive by world standards. All the surface and near surface coal reserves in the UK were worked out years ago, so only deep mined coal is available, whereas there are many countries in the world that still have reserves that can be exploited by open cast mining. 5. Global warning is far from being a positive for the UK. More extremes of weather (droughts, flooding, heatwaves that our infrastructure is not designed for), degradation of nature, and sea level rise all have a cost. Nature degradation alone could reduce GDP by 12% - larger than the hit to GDP from the global financial crisis or Covid-19. www.ox.ac.uk/news/2024-04-29-nature-degradation-could-cause-12-loss-uk-gdp

I started to write something similar in response - at least to some of the points - and then just thought: why?. I mean even the "for temperate climates for the UK.....global warming would be a positive" one could spend ages unpacking. It's "tell me you don't understand climate change without telling me you don't understand climate change" in a single sentence.

michaelc There's no doubt that populists on both right and left are exploiting climate change scepticism. That's only to be expected tbh. What's sad is that the mainstream right is adopting a more sceptical posture too. This needn't and shouldn't be so. Margaret Thatcher understood climate change. She would be appalled.

Are you suggesting there is no political alignment when it comes to CC ? There's alignment all right... The entire sane world is aligned. Climate change is a serious and imminent threat to this planet and every living thing upon it. There is no rational scientific basis for anything other than alignment with that PoV. The counterpoint is entirely selfish denialism from crackpots and fruitloops*, funded by the more ostrich-like end of the fossil fuel industry who are simply terrified of their profits disappearing, along with professional disruptors who want short-term power (and thereby wealth) for themselves without caring about the future. It's surely really quite hard to look at the last few years' worth of global natural disasters and deny the place of climate change in their making... isn't it? You'd think even the xenophobic end of nationalism would accept the basic reality that climate change is fuelling mass migration as more and more of the world experiences the effects. * - remembers which thread this is...

So who is the ostrich? We don't have a "mainstream right" in the UK - the remainder of the Tories that survived Johnson and Truss are now in a death-spiral to cuddle up to Reform. The "mainstream right" in the US that survived the Tea Party's poison chalice was killed by the Trumpkins. Two simple yes/no questions for you, michaelc 1. Do you think the scientific consensus is aligned behind anthropogenic climate change being a serious and imminent threat? 2. Do you believe that consensus?

What alot of garbage. Keep praying at the Church of the Eco Hypocrite with Caroline Lucas, Annalena Bareback and the Chick who lives next door. Abuse and casual misogyny. Well done. Just for the record, I'm no eco warrrior and certainly not a Green. Their opposition to nuclear power has done great damage, especially in Germany. I'm just an ordinary guy who understands the science.

Just for the record, I'm no eco warrrior and certainly not a Green. Their opposition to nuclear power has done great damage, especially in Germany. 1970s-style "Nuclear Power? No Thanks!" green attitudes in Germany certainly did a lot to prevent the growth of nuclear power back in the day, but the more recent argument is simply that carbon-neutral renewables were cheaper than continuing to invest in the few ageing plants they had - and Fukushima was the final straw. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-65260673And that was before situations like the Russians threatening Zaporizhzhia. So, while I don't agree with the German attitude to nuclear power, I can certainly understand it. You're right about the harm that sticking with coal instead of nuclear's done, though. German electricity generation is sitting at 307g CO2/kWh right now - around 50% higher than the UK average last year - but that includes 63% renewable - about twice the UK average. www.nowtricity.com/country/germany/Coal just over 20% of their generation right now, while the last UK coal plant was taken out of operation last month.
