I wouldn't go that far. I would expect attendees of C of E schools for example to experience a significant weighting towards Christianity whilst still learning about other faiths. Quite right Mike. Not all religious studies are the same in the UK. Although the gov makes it clear gcse religious studies students must study two religions, it can be any two religions from the seven. Such as Catholicism and Christianity. The weight of the course can be 75/25 or 50/50 for two religions. However, it is the school choosing the topics for the students if they have to take the GCSE as a subject, unlike the religious freedom enjoyed by the british people here. in which case that isn't "religious studies", that's more like Christian indoctrination. If we are going to have "religious studies" as a GCSE subject, then it ought to require a broader based curriculum. I'm a little gob smacked at what you've said: that it can be one single religion, plus a deeper dive into one subset (sect).

Umm, Catholicism IS Christianity. ITYM Catholic Christianity and Protestant Christianity. But they're one religion, Christianity.

You could even argue Allah is the same God as in Christianity. I suppose you don’t read about Adam, Moses in the islamic texts. There's no argument. Three stops on the Abrahamic timeline. Judaism -> Christianity -> Islam. All three broadly agree on the Old Testament. It's down to which of the two other major prophets you go with, Jesus and Muhammed, as to where you get off the timeline. Jesus alone? Christianity. Both? Islam.

Judaism has conflict between Orthodox and Reform. Christianity has conflict between Catholicism and Protestantism and Orthodoxy. Islam has conflict between Sunni and Shia. You'd think, since it's the same big man at the end of it all, that he'd step in and clear the confusion up between all the various self-appointed sales departments, wouldn't you...?

Some may see them as different 'religions', though I don't really understand that: it is a matter of fact that Catholicism is a branch of Christianity, not a separate religion, and Catholicism as an identifiable branch arose from the Great Schism resulting in 'it' and the Eastern Orthodox branch. Subsequent schisms naturally resulted in other branches. But they are all part of Christianity. Of course, like all the best families, it hasn't stopped them hating each others guts for >1000 years, almost more than they hate members of different families. Although to be fair they have tended to go a bit further than most families do, what with pogroms, burning 'the others' at the stake, alliances to wage wars on alliances of the 'other' side of the family etc. etc.

Yes, quite right. But it is not always religion vs religion.
IIRC, there was someone proclaimed himself as the brother of Jesus and led a rebellion against a government in Asia.

They cannot be seen hanging out together or even talk sometimes with other Christian faiths, except with the intention to convert them as JW. You won’t see JW going to any Christmas / birthday parties.

I've looked at the link. Thanks for that. Interesting.
So it seems that in our GCSE Religious Studies system, you have a 'Primary' Religion and a Secondary Religion. You select one primary and one Secondary. So far so reasonable. As your Primary Religion, you have a choice of 3:
Christianity, Catholic Christianity, and Islam. So you can have any Abrahamic Religion you want, as long as its mostly Christian, and isn't Judaism.
That suggests to me that the Catholic church has had a wee bit too much sway on things: why does it get its own recognition as a 'Primary' choice? Now I'm going to go on a limb here and guess that in this context 'Catholic Christianity' MIGHT include all branches originating from that original 'schism' i.e. it includes everything that came afterwards including Protestantism etc. Except that the general definition of 'Catholic Christianity' seems to be religious sects that accept the authority of the Pope.
Umm. Intrigued.

[...] Any Jehovah Witness would say there are more than 100 religions out there. Not inaccurate, but like saying there are more than 100 streets in London... Wikipedia reckons roughly 4,200 religions and lists a fair number of them here. Apropos of nothing, I was musing where the Plymouth Brethren sat in that catalogue, yet couldn't find them listed. So I reckon at least 4,201 religions.

The thread title says "Politics" and here we are, meandering through Religious Studies.
And no-one has mentioned the Wee Frees.

They cannot be seen hanging out together or even talk sometimes with other Christian faiths, except with the intention to convert them as JW. You won’t see JW going to any Christmas / birthday parties. True in parts (they call it disfellowship). They don't celebrate Christmas (it stems from the pagan festival of Saturnalia, plus they prefer to worship their god Jehovah above his son Jesus) and birthdays make the subject too much the centre of attention, which they prefer to avoid. Hank Marvin of the Shadows is a devout JW. He certainly hung around with others, including the non-JW Cliff Richard, as we all know. For several years, before he emigrated to Australia, Hank was in the same congregation as my late mother, who also got baptised into the JW faith. I met Hank and his wife Carole many times as a lad and remember him as a pleasant and really humble man. Absolutely no celebrity airs & graces about him. My mother had plenty of non-JW friends. The organisation simply asked that you lead a decent life by example and attempt to spread the message. It's fair to say having non-JW friends was perhaps frowned upon at times, but never grounds for anyone being disfellowshipped that I was ever aware of. Consequently, I was brought up with no birthdays or Christmas from the age of 12 or so (I felt so sorry for my younger sisters), and, once I was old enough, decided the JW thing wasn't for me. The glaring dichotomy that we weren't allowed birthdays because the individual wasn't supposed to be in the limelight, while Hank could strut his stuff on the stage to millions of adoring fans, was just one amongst many concerns I had back then. Fortunately all in the distant past - I'm going back 50+ years here!

!/2 has worked with Norwegian crews nearly all his working life . Quote : Drunken bigoted buggers, unless you are English(and Party Chief).
Difficult to generalise , but I think you will find that Brits are pretty tolerant compared to most of the world population.
