First thing to try is to clear the cache on the errant browsers and see if that helps.

It's ok, panic over. I rebooted the modem, and that seemed to clear it.
I had tried all the usual stuff, checking to see if the site was down, clearing cookies/cache etc, rebooting lap top etc. Nothing happened, but it was weird that I could access the site through 4G, but not through my broadband. My laptop, smart tv and phone just didn't want to know when connected to the broadband.
Then it dawned on me, that the only connection, (pardon the pun) was the router. Tried rebooting that and hey presto, problem solved. Well that's a new one on me, and one to add to the list of checks when I get problems in the future.
Although I'm unsure why my router was having a hissy fit with SS, perhaps it was coming out in sympathy with it's electronic buddies, those evil bots

Bizarre - I'm having the same issue, clearing cookies/using a different browser isn't working - time to reboot the router.........

Another one you occasionally see (as in I think I've seen it once in more years than I care to count on Windows machines) is needing to flush your DNS cache.

I can get to the login page by proxy server, but I'm not comfortable running my login details through it. I have had a browser extension refreshing the available loan page all day so I wonder if my connection has been blocked by SS - is this technically possible?

Yes, that's one way to deal with denial of service attacks.

Oh dear, well I can only assume that they have blocked my router/connection for the constant 5 sec browser refreshing I'd left on all day.

Maybe another red herring, but I have noticed that the refresher (I use Reload) quite often refreshes not to the present page, but to the page before. I haven't investigated it, but I guess it is something to do with the way it holds the URL for refreshing. I tend to turn it off a few minutes before I start doing anything that needs to be both swift and accurate - not that this is any guarantee!

That's a sure fire way of looking like a bot, they might have blocked your ip address. A friendly email to SS might unblock it, or contact your isp for a new ip address. Be interested to know the outcome, as it would show SS as being on the lookout for bots and have the tools/intent to deal with them.

What a faff, but at least its working for now......

Doesn't the "Available loans" page auto refresh every 4 seconds anyway? If so, perhaps using a browser add-in to refresh every 5 seconds doesn't achieve anything significant apart from getting your IP banned by SS?
