Oh dear, well I can only assume that they have blocked my router/connection for the constant 5 sec browser refreshing I'd left on all day. Doesn't the "Available loans" page auto refresh every 4 seconds anyway? If so, perhaps using a browser add-in to refresh every 5 seconds doesn't achieve anything significant apart from getting your IP banned by SS? I guess that's why SS chose 4 seconds.

That's a sure fire way of looking like a bot, they might have blocked your ip address. A friendly email to SS might unblock it, or contact your isp for a new ip address. Be interested to know the outcome, as it would show SS as being on the lookout for bots and have the tools/intent to deal with them. This would seem unlikely as they have not bothered to amend their T&C.

Another useful utility for investigating suspected blocked IP's is the Tor Browser which as the blurb says "The Tor software protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world: it prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location, and it lets you access sites which are blocked."

Is this 4 second refresh definite? Will you see it reloading each time? I think that mine takes much longer to refresh on its own (ie. unless I trigger it).

The automatic 4 second site refresh isn't working for me - it would update for a single change but then stop updating until I did a manual refresh.

I am having the same issue. Not able to restart the rooter though. I had a refresher running yesterday also - if you want to pick anything up on the SM then using a browser refresh is the only way. Pickup up over 1k yesterday in loans I was after.

And leaves you wide open to man-in-the-middle attacks by the [somewhat dodgy] relays you are routing through? FWIW though I can't get to SS at the moment, and I can see no reason why my IP would have been blocked since I haven't even looked at them for several hours, and haven't written a bot (yet). If I was going to write a bot I think I'd just toss in pipelined 'buy' requests for £10k on each and every loan (no point wasting time looking to see if anything is actually available) .. should be able to hit quite a few per second, and the website wouldn't collapse until a few dozen people were doing the same .. p.s. clearing cookies cured my problem .. would be nice if SS could identify the cause and fix it though. Was getting 'unable to reach site' from all browsers, although ping or tracert was getting there just fine.

Warning AIUI the Tor browser is the entrance to the Dark Web. You could find yourself inadvertently downloading sites which bring you to the attention of the authorities

GSV3MIaC - I agree using Tor to logon to a site is possibly risky, but to simply see whether the site home page loads I would have thought would be fine. littleoldlady - dark web url's end in .onion and are not accessible through search engines so the chance of accidentally stumbling on them is slim.
For those that haven't heard the term dark web before, this link to the UK's "PC Advisor" magazine provides a decent explanation www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/internet/what-is-dark-web-how-access-dark-web-deep-joc-3593569/

mrclondon, the dark web (accessed by Tor) is also where you go to buy drugs, Kalashnikovs, launder bitcoins and distribute child pornography etc. Unless people know exactly what they are doing, and why, I would think very carefully before using it. By definition use of it will raise eyebrows in official circles (and, whilst not trivial, use of it has and can be broken / subverted).

Simply downloading Tor will almost certainly be logged at Cheltenham, but I doubt they would take any action on just that alone. However personally I want to distance myself as far as possible from that sort of stuff.

So according to the article quoted here, this forum is part of the deepnet since it lies behind a login page.
