It seems that they have been working hard all weekend to resolve the problems with our valuable forum. But still no success. Maybe it is time for the FC IT team to say "FC IT, we have done our best - no shame - perhaps it is time to call the help desk, even on the premium rate number".

The avatar defaults obviously come from the same design shop as the default pictures for loan applications. (Legoland? tm) 8>.

It's a Vanilla forum. They were hacked in 2013 via the poor implementation of reCaptcha when setting up an account here www.fixedincomeinvestor.co.uk/x/forum.htmlThat wasted a previously good email address that got spammed to death. I vowed never to join a Vanilla forum again. John

I now use use a disposal email address for anything with low security like a forum. Yahoo have disposable email addresses offered in the settings and let you have as many addresses as you like all in one account, funnelled into the same inbox. You can append a note to remind you what the address is for. If an address goes bad, you can just delete it. And for non-official sites, false date of birth, etc is a good idea to protect against id fraud. If you use the same false details every time you know what they are if you ever need them.

It's even easier if you register yourself a domain with fasthosts and forward email from there .. makes it easy to slough off a bad email address, and also to jump ship (with your main email addresses) to a new ISP without having to update half the planet. my isp lets me have all the email addresses I want anyway, but having them forwarded is a much neater way of dealing with things.

I do have plenty of ISP email addresses, some for finance (one for each bank, stockbroker etc), some Hotmail for forums and personal email plus a number of yahoo addresses for shopping accounts. So no cross contamination if one goes bad. I also have multiple names and birthdays for those sites where accuracy of identity is not important. John

I considered having my own domain but couldn't really justify it. Having worked for BT from when they were the GPO I had certain benefits where phone, dialup, email, broadband and TV were concerned. However, now I'm retired and have to pay real money for communications I might just have a go. John

It's seriously cheap these days - I bought mine for 10 years from pocket change (just so I don't have to renew every year). Now if you want their email server and web hosting etc etc it gets more expensive, but basic email forwarding is free (albeit confusing to some mail senders who have trouble coping with .me.uk domains, which is what I picked, and with emails going someplace other than where they expected).

Well..... sometimes. According to a friend of mine there are >>no<< six character alphabetic .com web addresses left. He sold his one (hissurname.com) for $250k. They offered 50k, he said he wasn't interested. They went away for six months and then offered 100k, he wasn't interested. They went away for another year and then offered the $250k at which point he thought "what's in a name"? His surname isn't even that interesting. Nice money if you can get / could have got it .

Just as well I was happy with a .me.UK domain then! When I registered mine there were all sorts (down to a couple of characters iirc) available.

OK, not six characters - but GSV3MIaC.com isn't registered. Nor is GSV3MI.com...
