Interesting. I am working on a tiny project for which I had to annoy reCaptcha. I took up a loan at random and starting selecting the wrong images on purpose (always selecting the bottom row). After a multitude of times, reCaptcha gave up and decided that I must be human, probably thinking that a bot would be more intelligent than that.
Edit: Tried it again - counted 22 times.

Was it just a one-time thing for that one loan (i.e you missed the loan anyway), because it might of just timed out? If so you better be prepared for the barrage of street signs you are going get

It just stopped showing pictures and checked the box that I am not a bot. Yes the loan has long been sold, but this behaviour is interesting anyway. In any case I am not worried about getting street signs at the moment as I will not be buying for a short time. No one here seems to want to share the 6-figure sums they talk about with me. and I run out of money.

It's important to remember that ReCaptcha is a research project for Google. AIUI, they're trying to get us to identify photos for them, so that when someone Googles 'palm trees' they can serve up a collection of photos of palm trees. So when they serve up pictures to you for SS, they might include a couple of photos that have been overwhelmingly identified as palm trees, plus another new photo they're researching. So for some pictures there is no right answer because Google haven't offered it up enough times. In that case, you'd probably 'pass' the test whether or not you selected that photo. They'll pay attention to when photos are selected and when they're not, and from that they'll decide what the picture contains and can confidently serve it up in search results or in someone else's ReCaptcha puzzle.
I had a very odd experience the other day. I forget what I was being asked to identify, but whenever I clicked on a photo it disappeared and was replaced by another photo. Some of the follow-up photos also had the item I was trying to identify, so I had to click on them as well. Eventually, all of the appropriate items had been replaced by inappropriate items so there was nothing left to select. At that point I clicked on the Verify button and Google was happy enough to put a tick in the 'I am not a robot' box and allow me to proceed. By then, of course, there was nothing left to buy, but Google don't care about that!

It considers many variables when trying to detect if you're human. Interestingly, it also monitors the movement of your mouse to see if it can tell whether you're a bot or not.

for some pictures there is no right [wrong] answer . . . In that case, you'd probably 'pass' the test whether or not you selected that photo. Like this one perhaps?

It'll monitor which of the images your mouse moves over, but no more than that. It can't do anything more than that - and, of course, many people are using touch-screens with no mouse.

And have a look at this one. This looks like Google are having a little bit of fun with suspected bots

I just could not find the letter "y" in any of their picture sets.

With regard to resetting of the reCaptcha showing pictures.
Yesterday, I definitely burnt all my possibilities of getting "Free passes" as I was looking for material for the artwork above. Today I did get a free pass as I had to invest another £50. This was at about 9am.

I've found that I consistently get three goes in a row without pictures. Once in a while I get an extra one, but last night, I had a really freaky set...
The images themselves were nothing in remarkable, simply clicking on water. It's what happened when I did so - instead of receiving ticks and a white border, the images were replaced by "dry" ones. Eventually, all the images were dry, so there was nothing to tick. I therefore clicked the verify button, and was accepted. Needless to say, however, by the time I'd gone through this rigmarole, someone else had beaten me to the punch!
