This causes the webpage to become unresponsive for a few seconds, which is annoying . It only started happening recently (yesterday?), so I assume it's an advert....? Has anybody else experienced this?

Well I updated to the latest version of Chrome, and therefore the newest version (of its own) of Shockwave and it's still happening.

Not seen the problem, but then I do have ads blocked .. Ublock origin works for me on ffox, I assume that there must be a similar solution for chrome?
Win10? Yuk!!

It took me a while to take to Win10 but I did eventually. Now I really like it. One point of note though, you need to turn off an amazing amount of..... functionality I believe they call it..... that talks home to MS HQ. Do some googling, there's loads of guides available now.

Not for me .. I'll stick with 7. brin, if you want the stupid notification item to go away, you need to uninstall the MS 'update' (which is really nagware) and then stop Wupdate from putting it back. See: www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/windows/how-stay-on-windows-7-8-forever-3614204/If you do update it may or may not work (I had to roll mine back, basically lost network connectivity) at which point I find it had trashed my Task scheduler task lists. Several hours to recover. Oh, and it had mangled my recycle bin too. And as registerme says, it comes with an awful lot of 'talk back to M$oft' functions, most of which are a pain. On the good side it does at least know about USB3 and suchlike right out of the box (although upgrading a machine which already has drivers installed should not be an issue .. putting Win7 on a 2015/2016 vintage PC from scratch can be exciting.).

Thanks GSV3MIaC . it worked a treat, no more bothersome pop up, i must admit the privacy thing put me off it, there's enough people nosing in our lives already without MS getting involved any further.

Can I, at this point, smugly say that there is not one single piece of Microsoft software in this house? Three laptops, one tablet and two smartphones? Yes, one laptop is Apple, but that's not actually mine...

<whispers> I'm actually clean-shaven at the moment.
B'sides, I don't call my facefur a beard. That implies that it's deliberate. It's just... stubble.
Very, very long stubble.

Can I, at this point, smugly say that there is not one single piece of Microsoft software in this house? Three laptops, one tablet and two smartphones? Ahem: www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2166123/microsoft-contributed-code-canonical-linux-2632Yes, you are running Microsoft software. Admittedly, it's only (small) parts of the Kernel. Also, Shockwave (although I think people might be meaning Flash instead) is a Adobe product. I've had Flash misbehave on my Linux boxen on more than one occasion. I run a mixed of Linux (mostly Debian and Ubuntu), MacOS and Windows in this house. All of them have up and downsides. Nothing is perfect. Let's not go back to the bad old days of "M$" bashing because we're all hipsters and trying to be cool. It's 2016. Everyone has moved on. The core issue here is the adverts on this forum have taken a dramatic turn for the worse and are adversely affecting the user experience. Whilst it's Proboards who look after that side of things, there is still a discussion to be had in the longer term. Do we ignore the problem and just run adblockers? Does this in turn make the board unsustainable? Is there a case for migrating everything elsewhere where more control can be had? Should we all chip in and make the forum "ad free"?

There was a thread about ad-freeing the forum a year or more back, and most folks (then) weren't bothered .. some even liked the (relevant, themed) ads. The cost of deleting ads is pretty trivial, many folks here could pay it out of pocket change and not even notice .. and any/all of the platforms certainly could. Perhaps we should reopen the original poll, or start a new one, about whether we want an ad-free forum (and who should pay .. or how to select among the volunteers!)? Meantime I'll stick with ublock origin and put up with the proboards nag (and Win7, which just sorta works, as did Win2k/XP, unlike Vista (spit) or Win8.
