Nationwide on and off problems with BT Internet apparently. Aha. Mine's been a bit flaky today. That explains it.

An explanation of todays internet problems in this BBC article. "BT's problems turn out to have been caused by a 20 minute power cut at a data centre in London's Docklands." Naively I thought data centres had backup power which would switch in seamlessly in the event of a power cut.

My guess ,but i suspect this wll be true. In exchanges and data centre's the normal power arrangement is mains running rectifiers across the output of which sit batteries . All backed up by a big backup deisel generator. As all data being used by the system to operate is volatile, ie no power good night, the batteries have to hold the system until the generator replaces the mains supply. These batteries are normally of a capacity to hold the system for 1 to 2hrs. However these batteries are now new, improved , lighter, cheaper and absolute no matter who makes them. Its very difficult to know what there actual performance will be unless you turn off the mains and find out the hard way. But in my bitter experience 2 minutes not 2hrs can be the case, far to short a times to run up the deisel warm it up a bit and switch it to load. BT and other providers have come up with all sorts of systems and tricks to try and passive test them and to be fair the situation has vastly improved over the years but the only real test is when you need it most.

Everything fine and fast here. (As it was earlier in the day). Diamond loan pushed back yet again (to tomorrow), and the two 9%ers too.
