One we get on the handpump every November from Wychwood is the notorious "Dog's Bollocks" - a fruity bitter (about 4.5% abv, which is marketed as "may contain nuts".

15/20 We need captainconfident on here now. I reckon he'll get at least 18/20 without cheating.

9/20. Luck more than anything; only genuinely recognised 3 or 4. With the recent rapid rise of local microbreweries, it's no surprise that these slightly unusual names exist. They do make some mighty good ale though (I recommend you try as many as possible... )

I am a bit suspicious by nature, and the first of these "real" names I checked out is not a real beer. Sadly "A big thank you for looking after the cat" seems to have been made up by BuzzFeed for their list of silly beer names. Neither the brewery named nor the entire internet of beer drinkers knows of such a beer.

After failing miserably it did remind me of one of my teenage days..........I decided to leave school at quite an early age as I wanted a career in engineering............while I looked round for a suitable apprenticeship I got a job in a small "supermarket" (they were quite new in those days). I worked there for about 3 months and felt quite proud that during my short employment there they offered me management training to tempt me to stay despite on my first day I smashed a whole case of pine disinfectant by failing to check the other end of a conveyor belt before pressing start. (maybe the takings went up that week 'cos the whole shop smelt like a pine forest for about a week!). Here's the connection!!......on my leaving day at lunch time I was taken to the pub across the road by a devilish colleague. I had been introduced to Watney's light & bitter (yuk!) as this was North East London.......anyway he said you might like this beer He ordered me a pint. The landlord raised his eyebrows and disappeared to his beer cellar. He returned with 3 dusty bottles......I don't remember much after that, but apparently I did drink a 2nd pint!

16/20.... via almost total guesswork (some of them were obviously made up... I hadn't actually heard of or drunk any of the real ones!)

That's not even a proper beer, a pale ale at 4.1% would be described as like "making love in a punt" where I come from.

That's not even a proper beer, a pale ale at 4.1% would be described as like "making love in a punt" where I come from. It’s the taste and the quality that makes good ale not just the strength but if ABV is the benchmark try this for a pale ale: www.kirkstallbrewerycompany.com/portfolio/generous-george/And it’s a damned good beer!
