/Rant
OK, I can stand it no more .. how can we call this a MARKET, when there is absolutely no market balancing mechanism? I.e. you can't change the prices to influence supply/demand, and you can't even (like AC or ABLRATE) operate any sort of 'offer to buy' queuing system?
It's NOT a market, it's a 'fastest finger first' botfest (organised to mostly take place at times when only bots and idiots (at least in the UK) are awake.)
If supply ever outstrips demand it will become the exact opposite, an illiquid Ponzi-style black hole, where your only hope of exit is to persuade some new chum to buy a ticket in.
/End Rant

I agree some kind of system would be great where you could allocate your dosh to a loan when avalable you could then just get on with your day and would be totally fair I'm sure the teck ppl at ss could do this quite easy

much as I like the recent rant, I'm not that excited by the whole SM balancing thing. I'd like SS to keep it simple, the present improvements are already being digested and struggled with so offering more functionality before the present mess is sorted makes no sense. There are those who think I T change is easy and then there are those of us who have suffered because of the effect of "improvements", after the last SS site crash I just hope someone has learned. When I were a lad we used to test out software

What's wrong with extending prefunding to the SM?

What's wrong with extending prefunding to the SM? Are you suggesting that we effectively produce a list of people who would like to buy x amount in PBLxxx whenever it comes up for sale. Would this be on a first come first serve basis? For example I don't have anything on PBL048 yet but would like to diversify - if I understand your suggestion I could post, say, £100 pre-fund so that the next time £100 comes up for sale I would get it (assuming I was top of the list of those waiting for a slice). Is that what you are suggesting? Interesting idea. I like it from the point of view of being able to diversify since the SM is currently always empty when I look and when anything does appear it goes far too fast for me to buy.

That's sounds like a great idea, obviously the queue would be long and people would complain about it not moving quickly enough but it would save a lot of effort and remove any advantage had by bots or people who can sit in front of the screen all day pressing refresh.

That sort of thing .. or look at how AC does it (where anything becoming available is pro-rata'd among willing buyers, iirc), or other secondary markets where you can make an offer at whatever level you like to see if anyone will sell to you (ABLRate for instance) although that invites bots and gaming/flipping unless you put some extra controls on it. A simple queue would make it slightly fairer, but would not solve the 'how do you balance supply with demand' issue (only ability to change prices can do that, iirc my Economics-101 correctly).

ABLrate's SM is very confusing. A system like that requires premiums / discounts and I prefer SS's way of par sales.

Prefunding on the SM could work in various ways but I envisaged the simplest, ie more or less the same as on new loans. You could set a global prefund amount or one specific to a particular loan. When a part arrives on the SM you get a share. The main problem is likely to be massive over funding so that everyone gets a trivial share, but there are ways of addressing that.
