/mod hat off
Hmm, just been trying to 'do the business' for 2015/2016 and I discover the new BETA on-line self assessment system has been 'improved' to where it now want to use a 6 digit code google authenticator code every time I login (OK, two factor verification) and THEN it wants my passport details. Every damn time. I suspect this is broken, rather than a feature??
My partner, who doesn't have a passport or driving license, can't get in at all (the questions about 'which bank did you open an account with in 2009' being not very easy to answer, and 'which of the following addresses are associated with you' offering only 5 incorrect answers). Doesn't matter, since all answers lead to 'technical error' page. Considering we are trying to give them money for untaxed P2P interest, we am massively unimpressed. 8<.
If you haven't started yet, start early .. and you might need that passport (without it Experian might be able to verify you, depending on who you bank with).

I just got in with no problem. First screen - usual login details Second sceen - asks for 6 digit authentication code sent to my mobile This logged me in to the usual HMRC "logged in" screen, which AFAICS is unchanged.

Agree its a nightmare. I had the same problem, it's horrendous. I managed to use P60 information rather than the passport/ID which was easier as I have my payslips accessible through an online system. However still a PITA. My account uses my mobile for the two step verification and there's no way to update the number or change to Google authenticator (my wifes accounts uses this and it's much better) without having to call them. Which is even more frustrating. I've given up and resigned myself that it's only once a year...
Security is one thing but this is definitely over the top!

Stop making me nervous! I've had no trouble so far, last year or this (last on site a couple of days ago). I just need to enter bit of dividend info, then the usual wheedling Steptoe Snr "I'm oooold ... please let me know if I've got anything wrong..." in the extra info box, then SUBMIT ... and await the immediate request for a four figure sum!! I haven't got a passport now!!

Need to do this soon - whats the Beta? started back in Nov (I like to estimate my future tax position around then and play with some numbers to see different scenarios), so has there been a change since then?

Yes it is a bit horrid, and probably more horrid than it needs to be, but it's still less horrid than the old paper form!
I used it, my missus used it and (with a bit of help) my mother-in-law used it, and it worked for all of us.

I remember this been there when I logged on a few months ago. And when I did my returns a couple of weeks ago over Christmas it made me do the extra details everytime too! P60 or a most recent payslip was the one I opted for.

I tried to do by Mums return in October. She has neither a passport nor Driving Licence. So failed security. The Help was useless. (it should have made it clear that you cant use the system without these). Also failed additional security as my mum wont do online banking. Then wont through the external agency part and failed that too. I think it was Experian, i spoke to a helpful chap on their helpline who suggested i go back to a Inland Revenue IT 'helpline. This i did- response- no in these circumstances you are 'locked out' of the online system.
The inland Revenue Chap said i should print the form off, send it in and send it back by post - he ('helpfully') said i should do it pretty quickly as we were faced with the paper deadline of 31 October or a £100 fine.!
Tax now all sorted and refund in mums bank, but i have emailed the MP who is chair of the Public Accounts Committee and highlighted this fiasco. I am a bit surprised there have not been more complaints.

How do you get in if they send the code to the old number?

How do you get in if they send the code to the old number? Your have to call them to change your number or amend the two step verification from mobile to Authenticator. Even if you update your number when logged in on the personal details page, it doesn't change the number they send the code to!

When I tried, it didn't send me the access code, I then tried several more times, with no success. The access codes then started to arrive about three hours later and continued until 2:30 in the morning (last request about 1:00pm), all of which were out of date when received (use within 15 minutes of request). Eventually stumbled in by some backdoor without a code. I had asked for 'help' which arrived by email 2 days later, see below.
A few days later I signed in again to check everything was OK and it all worked perfectly, access code sent immediately and worked OK, so didn't seem to have been a problem at my end.
I wouldn't wait till the last minute to fight with it!
For info (this may help someone) this is what I eventually got from 'help'. I did ask a specific question which was ignored. Note the possibility of 'lock out':
Hello Thank you for contacting HMRC User Support Team. If you try to confirm your identity more than 5 times in an hour or 8 times within 24 hours you will be locked out for 7 days. To use HMRC’s online services, you need to set up 2 step verification and confirm your identity. Please refer to our Frequently Asked Questions below: Can I opt out of two step verification? • No, it is an essential security requirement to maintain the security of your tax account. • If you do not own a mobile phone you can enter a landline number if you prefer. My Access Code did not work • The code should usually be received within a couple of minutes and entered within 15 minutes of requesting it. • The code is always 6 digits and only numbers. The code is sent from 60 886, this is not the code to enter. I have received multiple Codes, which one do I use? • You should use the most recent code you received. If you are unsure about which code to use, please sign out of the website and sign in again to request a further access code. I want to change the telephone number I previously registered. Can I do this? • Yes, but you will need to phone HMRC’s Online Service helpdesk and will need some Identification, such as a National Insurance number or tax reference number. Why didn’t I receive my access code? • You may have a premium rate number block set up with your mobile provider. Please contact your mobile provider to confirm this before logging back in and trying again. What If I continue to experience issues with access codes? Please reply to this message providing the following information: • The date and time you requested an access code • Your telephone number (including country code if applicable) • Is your telephone number a landline or mobile? • The country you are residing/located • The name of your network operator • The name of your roaming network (if applicable) • Have you received access codes in the past? I am being asked for Payslip details • If you are asked to enter the details from any one of your last 3 payslips you cannot use a payslip which has zero or a refund (negative) amount, choose another one which has a positive amount. I am being asked about my P60 • If you have not received a P60 you should obtain one from your employer. If you receive a private pension your pension provider should give you an annual statement which is the equivalent of a P60, ask them for details if you don’t have one. If you are being asked “How much National Insurance did you pay last year?” this can be find on your P60. • If you have received more than one P60 for a tax year, you can use any individual P60 (do not add them together) to confirm your identity. If one of these P60’s contains Zero tax paid or a refund (negative) amount, you should use another P60. I am being asked about my Bank Accounts • When asked to enter details of a bank account where you have received your state pension/child benefit/tax credit payments, please note that this can be a bank account that you currently use or can be a previous/closed account. If your tax credit was a joint claim, you can enter the bank account for either claimant. • If you are asked to enter the details of an interest bearing bank account, this may not be an account for which you have received payments of tax credits, state pension or child benefit it will be another bank account. • When confirming your bank account you need to enter the last 4 numbers of your account. This can be found on your bank statement, some banks do not put account numbers on their cards. The long number in the middle of your card is not your account number. I am being asked for my UK Passport • If you are asked to enter details of your UK Passport, enter your name exactly as shown on your passport and the expiry date (not your date of birth). If you select No to the question, Do you have a valid UK Passport, you may be presented with an additional layer of questions provided by CallCredit (https://www.callcreditstatreport.co.uk/Help/ContactUs) If the advice above has not solved your problem please respond to this email advising the exact problems you are having. or Try GOV.UK Verify that may allow you to sign in and use the HMRC online services. Kind regards HMRC user support team

There is a 'back door' which may help some folks (finally got my partner in) .. thanks to whatever techie at HMRC typed the following (see, there is SOME intelligent life there): "We are experiencing some Technical difficulties with the online service you are trying to use. Investigations are ongoing, but if you are attempting to submit a tax return for last year (15/16) the link below may give you access to the self-assessment services. www.tax.service.gov.uk/account/sign-in?continue=/business-account" by saying 'business account' (even if you aren't) you apparently bypass the passport/etc cr&p, and then you only have to cope with the two step verification. Trying to walk through it on the phone when the same phone is the recipient of the 6 digit code is impossible too; I'm all for Beta release, but in JANUARY (23 days from the annual deadline)?!?

I found myself signed-in as "business account" automatically, even though I had not requested it. I was apprehensive but everything else seemed to work as normal so I continued wit it. I got the usual code via SMS but no other requests. Perhaps they've bypassed some of the beta stuff becuase it's so flakey?
