Quite normal for HMRC. If a company makes the simple mistake of making a PAYE payment (on time) using the incorrect reference number it opens up a world of pain for that said company. Not happened to me - yet - but I have heard horror stories... Needless to say, HMRC never make a mistake and woe betide (great words from my old science teacher) anyone who does.
