I have just noticed that I have become a senior member with four stars and am really schocked. The board is only a few months old, or so, and I can remember being a shiny new member, then a junior member and then a full member, which was kind of OK and I though would last for a while. But senior member? I'm only a young porker in my mind, and I thought I had years before me and hundreds of posts before I had to face the tag 'senior' and its implications. I'm not ready. I had thought of spending some time as a troll, with a new avatar to suit, or to get really angry for a while and pepper the board with lots of asterisks and capitals, and even to be faced with expulsion by the moderators. But so far not even a bit of moderating or words of advice. How credible could I be as an angry young senior member? Or I might want to be an uncritical supporter of FC for a while - the website works really great for me all the time - but would anyone believe a doddery old fool, and maybe that is still a troll? I suppose I might even be called wise, or worse still call myself wise. I haven't even made 300 posts yet - but clearly too many and my end is nearing. Maybe I could go and delete 100 posts or so, but that probably would not work. Or be reborn with a new email address. What does the future hold and when? Some people have five stars but they seem to be some sort of deity, and I would not qualify for the ascension and would not want to. I decided to see how long the senior member stage lasted, and how many posts did I have left? Who else to check but Old Grumpy - who was a senior member when God was a boy. He has sinned along the way but been forgiven/re-instated after the prayers of other members. A shock - Old Grumpy's post count is over 600 and he (or she with the banana) is still a senior member. Looking closer - sheer horror. Old Grumpy's post count is 666 - the mark of the beast. Of couse Old Grumpy and I are both beasts in the virtual taxonometric sense, but 666 could mean that Old Grumpy on his next post will go into a final and irretrievably lost state, and maybe if I do not shut up I will follow him. Don't try to reply, Old Grumpy, - you never know where you might end up, virtually.

Yeah, I'm not sure how you get to be a senior member merely by using more than your fair quota of keyboard strokes (not just talking about you here). On many boards you'd have to gain kudos (or whatever) by producing some reasonable quotient of useful non-drivel (I think it's called brownie points?) but here you just have to rabbit (damn these animals!) on. As you say, one can always aspire to moderator, or supermoderator, (or boring rods as we call then in the unclear pile business). Or you can buy the board .. that should be good for seven gold stars and a backward baseball cap in Man U colours.
But wait - suppose the enumeration of posts made is being done using the new math (FC style)?? Any minute now you could overflow, rounding error wise, and become a mere tadpole again ...

We've never touched the default settings for rank name and post count which are possibly not the best for this forum.

Can you fiddle with the descriptions too? I mean 'decrepit member' sounds much more plausible than 'very senior member'. And how about 'second childhood' member? What's with 'members' anyway .. Isn't this supposed to be a family friendly non-sexist location? 8>. Can't we be 'contributors'? (Yes OK children, you'll understand when you are older)
Your cut and paste is a bit fuzzy, but I guess that may be the senior eyes cutting in early...

I had logged on this morning to delete my posts here as very silly, just a bit of fun when discovering the new status - a senior moment. Detracts from my serious posts. But something useful has been made of it by others. It seems that if the number of posts, stars and membership grade are all tied together then they say nothing more than the number of posts. And stars and membership grades ar pointless. I thought junior member a bit insulting at the time (because of 'previous'), and now think that very senior member at 1000 posts is not a good attribution. Why not do away with the stars (other than five) and have 'new member' (if we must) for a few posts and 'full member'. We can all read the number of posts. The number of posts is not a good indicator of value - as my posts here demonstrate.

I don't even care if the post is from a new or regular contributor. If we need a system whereby we can judge the 'value' of a contributor then perhaps some sort of 'like' count should be visible. Is this a feature available to the forum elljay?

I agree. I imagine we can all think of contributors the quantity of whose posts far outweighs their quality!

I think the new member status is useful to help avoid beginners being told that they should know things - though this is a friendly board in general and it is not essential, and only for say 10 posts. But junior, senior and very senior are unhelpful. Stars a waste of space. I do not think that reputation building is worth the bother. Since this has been moved to feedback I should add that I find the board for FC (the one I use) most valuable and I like to support it to make sure it keeps ticking along (so some of my posts are just that) if I quibble about things it is because I believe that this board matters. In particular I would rather see this board flourish at the expense of the FC board - is there enough for two? FC no longer have any real interest in a forum, except to keep discussion on FC close and under control. I believe that they now 'moderate' posts before they get posted - which would be unacceptable here. Keep up the good work!

perhaps some sort of 'like' count should be visible. Is this a feature available to the forum elljay? The following text (code) needs to be added to the Mini-profile layout template It's ages since I added the code but I think it only starts to count once it's there so any old likes wouldn't be automatically added.

Nice observation, Blender. As it now stands, stars and titles have been dismissed, except new members are shown as "New Member" until they enthuse to the extent of five posts. Company representatives still show five stars - that's under consultation. "Likes" are currently disabled. (Personal opinion - if you really like something, say so. Don't just click another box on the internet...)
