As a side note, both Ripple and IOTA have rocketed in recent months. Iota by at least 400% and Ripple by more (If I remember it the right way around!). Surely with returns like that it has to be worth a ton (£100 not ton's!) of anybody's money?

This is the problem with crypto currency, nobody knows what the hell is going to happen. The guys who took on Bitcoin 4 years ago were called idiots and told how the whole thing was going to blow up in their faces. If you look now, anyone who invested $250 4 years ago now has over $4m in profit.
As I said, £100 may not be a lot (NOW!!) but it may be in a few months/years. We just don't know. But, in the bigger scheme of things, it is a risk worth taking. I could lose £100 in half an hour on a property P2P loan.
In for a penny.................... Totally agree...... i risked £1k yesterday...... (ripple) .. famous last words. edit.. Not a simple transaction BTW..... the trade was closed almost all the time i was trying to buy in... got in eventually tho..

I use Poloniex for trades, simple and quick. Do they do long term investment or do you have to keep renewing the position?

Exchange can keep for you and is safe till it gets hacked. For better security you need to be in possession of private key. Read about soft or hard wallets or offline wallets.

I purchased Bitcoin using Coinbase and it was really simple and they store it for you in a wallet(not sure how secure it is).
Is there a similar site to purchase Ripple?

Congratulation, Coinbase is indeed quite simple to use. If you would like to trade then try GDAX. You can log in with the same credential as for coinbase. Gdax is a coinbase's exchange. Moving your BTC from coinbase/gdax to your desired wallet is free. There are some rumours about Ripple being on coinbase sometime in a near future.

I thought it was common knowledge that a proportion of crypto-currencies are used for nefarious or "dark" activities?
