Seems like an awfully tangled tale. www.supremecourt.uk/cases/docs/uksc-2020-0008-judgment.pdfExtract: The factual background 2. The appellant is a national of Rwanda who came to the United Kingdom as a child and was granted indefinite leave to remain. In 2006 he was convicted of serious offences, and an indeterminate sentence for public protection was imposed, with a minimum of seven years to be served. It was recommended that he should be deported. In November 2012 the Secretary of State made a deportation order. That order has never been implemented. An application to the Secretary of State for the revocation of the order, made in March 2015, remains outstanding. 3. During 2013 the appellant was transferred to open prison conditions, and undertook voluntary work in the community. During 2014 and 2015 he worked as a volunteer at a charity shop. On 30 March 2015 the Parole Board directed his release on licence. He was however immediately detained by the Secretary of State under paragraph 2 of Schedule 3 to the Immigration Act 1971 (“the 1971 Act”). ..... The legal arguments then go on and on...

What half of the Labour party will you be voting for ? And therein lies this country's biggest political problem currently. The Labour party seem to be more interested in fighting each other than being an opposition. I swear the Corbynites would prefer to retain Johnson than have Starmer in power... When did we last have an effective opposition? Worth noting that the Home Sec at the time was Theresa May, and this was slap-bang at the height of the formal "Hostile Environment" policy that ended with the Windrush scandal and the resignation of Amber Rudd as Home Sec, under May's premiership.

To be honest I don't really care about the details of the case concerned. I do care about the Home Office unilaterally deciding to ignore a judge's decision because they thought it was wrong. That, combined with Raab's interest in seeing the government being able to overturn judgements because it thinks they might be wrong at some point in the future, is pretty bloody scary. And yeah overthehill , that's a fair question. I've taken to spoiling my vote (last GE and last local council / mayoral) elections, partly because I couldn't bring myself to vote for Corbyn's Labour, and partly because there's no "none of the above" option. But this Tory government really, really, really has to go.

Remember that your vote counts for THE NAMED INDIVIDUAL on the ballot paper. Which of those is the best (or even least-worst) individual to represent your constituency or ward? Unless you live in Islington North, you weren't voting for Jeremy Corbyn. Unless you live in Uxbridge and South Ruislip, you weren't voting for Boris Johnson. Unless you live in Holborn and St Pancras, you weren't voting for Keir Starmer.

Perhaps, but most MPs are whipped to death and scared shiteless of going against their Masters, so you really are voting for The Party when it comes to The Big Issues.

Personally I have some issues with the senior judges "implementation" of the law
but I do think lets say you came to the UK as a young child ( lets say under 12 ) you should not be deported to a country you really don't know, but lets say you come over at 15 and before you are 16 kill someone then deportation should be an option.
I think people can made a mistake even a serious one and perhaps deportation for a first offence is draconian, but Career criminals ( I can think of one with 30+ convictions for violence, car crime and shoplifting ) should be sent back.
I also heard of a case where someone due for deportation was put on a train to London and told to report to a deportation centre and oddly never arrived.
Again I know of a restaurant that now has been raided 3 times and on each occaision has been found to be employing illegal immigrants the £20,000 fine on the second occaision does not seem to have detered the owner )

"But this Tory government really, really, really has to go."
Rock? Hard Place?
Who on earth is anywhere near capable of replacing them?
No argument, I agree with the sentiment, but we literally have no other viable choices, IMHO.
It's "The curse of The West" in many/most Democracies, mostly a choice of only two parties, both below mediocre.

I don't agree with many of the policies of PC but on a regional level my local PC AM does a good job and will get my vote. On the other hand my local Council I have 2 councillors one of whom is a nut case and was telling me how all the street lights have CCTV cameras in that follow him around so even though he represents "my natural party" I will vote to get him out.

We think ours are bad try the US of A, many Americans believe we are communist because we have the NHS, I also saw one recently saying it was his "right to bare arms" under American law therefore he has that right if he visits Europe.
I had to respond and say "bare arms are ok, you can dress how you like, but do not try walking the streets in the UK with your pistol on your hip"

People vote for the colour of the ribbon. Constituency parties have central-party-yes-men foisted on them. If people voted for the actual individual, we might get some politicians with some character and integrity...

Absolute Fenian. I fell off my seat barstool when I heard his outrage because some Americans wanted to pay for their lunch with USD. Opening the till, taking a tenner out, he put it front of them saying "see that, that's the Queen, this is our currency" .
