after all of this, lets also celebrate the fact that Britain has its first Asian descent Prime Minister, or as Sathnam Sanghera writes in the times: "the first brown prime minister". Sadly I have my doubts whether that result would have been achieved had it gone to the Tory Party membership. But it didn't, and regardless of their politics, the fact that there is a 'brown' PM will make a huge difference in terms of role model/outlook of a particular chunk of the British population. Celebrate that fact? You sound as if Indians in this country are generally poor or otherwise "disadvantaged". I'm sure others will google it but my anecdotal evidence is that Indians brought up here are doing extremely well. Certainly they are well represented in professions such as dentistry, law, medicine and IT. Until I read your post, I hadn't even thought about it in terms of there being a "brown" PM. Good luck to him and the country but certainly not because he is from Indian descent. An Indian family have just taken over our corner store. Perfectly decent, hard working people who always have a smile on their faces. Very conscientious to - the 12yo son checks everyones age before selling them alcohol.

And nor had I particularly, until I started reading articles by Asian correspondents - such as Sathnam - celebrating the fact that it would provide a role model at the top of politics to Asians in Britain. Which just goes to show: sometimes it takes others from an ethnic group to point out how impactful something is to them. Of course, PM is the last of the great offices of state to have a holder from a minority ethnic group - Javid, Patel and Braverman as Home Sec; Cleverley as Foreign Sec (albeit for less than two months so far); Javid, Sunak, Zahawi, Kwarteng as Chancellor.

Shame on them if so, because any person or group discriminating on the basis of another's skin colour sounds innately racist. Its called having role models, not discrimination. In the same way that having the first woman PM helped to provide role models. Or having Obama as President. I look forward to a society where one's skin colour is as irrelevant as one's eye colour.

Have we had the shortest (duration) PM replaced by the shortest (stature) PM? I'm intrigued as to whether official records can confirm or otherwise. I'm sure there is one of our resident anoraks (you know who you are) who could get to work.

He will fit very well into photos as Macron is 5'7, Scholz and Zelensky 5'5 Ill get my coat

Still, at 5'6" I think he beats bracknellboy!

In my opinion a much better choice than Liz Truss, although he is in for one hell of a ride.

In my opinion a much better choice than Liz Truss, although he is in for one hell of a ride. That was never a particularly high bar to clear, confirmed by recent events. What is truly depressing is that out of 600 plus MPs there is not a single one that seems remotely of the stature to fill the role as it should be filled. That we seem to have been gifted the current least worse option is a damming indictment of the current state of the political system. I guess 'In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king' has never rang truer.

I have always taken the view that a democracy is only as smart as the average voter. Unfortunately most people seem to vote for political celebrities, and are more concerned with superficial charisma than whether they are likely to improve their quality of life.
