I does show that we need a backup for wind and solar, more tidal perhaps. Of course we could invest in power storage.
Rather like we invest in petrol storage or methane storage it is possible to store power, either as water, as battery or as H2.
"Oh but that is too expensive!"
everything is too expensive until it becomes the norm, then economies of scale bring the price down.
I have my own smallish Battery storage. and own shares in a gridscale energy storage investment trust. The returns compared to FF are abysmal, ditto my investments in a company (VESTAS) that makes wind turbines, and one that runs wind farms. one problem is that for the next few days we are likely to be tight so there is no spare to convert to H2 etc. For me I can justify my 5kWh battery thus Overnight I charge at 8P kWh, I use this during the day instead of paying 40p, Allowing to transit loses (which at this time of year just help to heat the house lets say I pay 10P So 5 Units in at 10P 50P saves me 5 units at 40p £2, so a £1.50 a day benefit in November to January 120 Days at £1.50 £180, then I have the saving of storing free electricity for use overnight on the other 245 days. And the days with intermittent cloud where when the sun goes in when I have the washer etc on and instead of drawing from the grid it uses battery. If I look at my figures there were 3 occaisions this year where having twice the battery capacity would have benefitted me ie a Sunny day followed by 2 very cloudy days. But to save me a couple of pounds on those 2 days would cost in excess of £1,000

the next headline is that it will ready to be commercialised within 30 years...... I don't have the links to hand but I read some more... legitimate (?) science reporting about this yesterday or the day before. The original (BBC?) reporting was perhaps a little more breathless than it should have been.

there is a Live DFS turn down event today 17:00 to 18:00
not sure about others but Octopus paying £3.37 for every kWh you save between those times. given the state of some peoples finances I can see people turning everything off and sitting with a candle and a battery radio to get a few £'s of credit.

Before P2P, savers put a guinea in a piggy bank, now they smash the banks to become guinea pigs.

This could be a crazy idea. It's based on your energy saving and very few people will benefit. However, lots more people will think about joining the scheme. To get the best benefit they will be turning on every device they can between 17:00 - 18:00 before signing up. Then they get the biggest saving when they join the scheme.

Weather adjusted, three hours prior to event and event window over previous four weeks, all measured in 30 minute slots to work out your savings reward.
But given you get paid for participation, even if you make no effort, there's no harm in opting in.
So turn on all your electric heaters from 2pm until 5pm, then switch over to your battery storage for 5pm until 6pm...

Meanwhile, I can't have a smart meter, because we don't have any mobile signal.

For anyone on Octopus Energy the first saving session is tomorrow 17:00 - 18:00 £2.25 per kWh you save ( based on your previous 10 days usage at the same time ) not too late to sign up and opt in. well I signed up, but haven't seen anything informing me of the first session. I still have a post it on the washing machine telling my wife to ONLY use it in 16:00-21:00 to get our basline 'peak period' usage up prior to being measured :-) How did you find out ? For anyone who isn't with Octopus, or any other company that doesn't have it's own scheme, you can use the Power Rewards app. I've only just joined so can't say what the payout will be, but you get a £5 Amazon credit for signing up before the end of January if you use a referral code. I won't post the code on here but if you want it drop me a message
