Betfair prices him being the next leader at around 5/1 at the moment. You might be right.

Yesterday I found myself talking to someone who seemed normal on the outside, and he told me that we had to leave the EU immediately with a hard Brexit, regardless of the economic cost. Why? Because he had researched it, and the EU was run by the Nazis. After WW2 the Nazis had gone into hiding, but in the background they had made it their mission to take over the EU. And their aim? Revenge against Britain for winning the war. This was not a joke and he was quite earnest and serious. I just thought everyone on the forum should be warned. Nought so strange as otherwise quite intelligent people. One of my dearly departed best mates was very successful, sold his company for £15M and had an excellent brain. So imagine my surprise when he confided in me that he had discovered that "The Government" opens a "Ledger" in your name on the day you're born and that later in life you can "settle" this Ledger after which you never have to pay tax again! He could never uncover the relevant Government Department though. And we won't talk about when he also got involved with a very flaky woman and became a firm believer in crystals and magnetic dots. Sorry about the side alley, now back to "Does Brexit deliver the electorates vote?"

The only thing I like about May is unlike so many other politicians, she has been firm on not destroying hundreds of years of democratic process in this country. To be fair to some of the other politicians I refer to, perhaps if they were actually sitting in her seat they might take the responsibility more seriously and realise the democractic written/unwritten constitution is more important than any other single issue including brexit.

Interesting, I think May's government has played fast and loose with our constitution (ie unwritten and based on tradition and precedent) when it's suited them.

I have a rather traumatic memory of, well I must have been six or seven, writing a story for my English homework in the style of a Commando comic (one of which I'd recently read). It did not go well for me . It was meant to be drawn, in pictures, dummkopf . Wir haben Wege zu hören

Let’s have PR for the vote with several options or eliminating series of votes.

I see Corbyn is playing games, trying to get May to agree Brexit will occur only if there's a 'proper' deal (rather than a no-deal exit). If May was stupid enough to agree with that, Labour can simply vote against any/all deals May dreams up in order to keep us in the EU. Might even work for Labour as remaining would probably lose Labour fewer votes than it would cost the Tories.
Telegraph suggesting Hammond has told business leaders that MPs will stop a no-deal Brexit www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2019/01/16/philip-hammond-tells-business-chiefs-mps-will-stop-no-deal-brexit/
Odds on Tory party splitting?

Given that Corbyn is a long-standing anti-European (as was his mentor, Benn, before him), the chances of that particular conspiracy theory having legs are low. I've been thinking for a good while that both parties are about > < this far from splitting internally. The Tory right/ERG lot will split off and merge with what used to be the (relatively) sane end of UKIP now they've gone all EDL, while the remainder of the party will move centrewards and become more Eurofriendly. The Labour centrists will split off and form a new centre-left party, maybe merge with the LibDems. The Corbyn/Momentum rump will just complete their takeover. It's just a question of neither wanting to be the one that blinks first. If one fractures, they both will.

I agree that Corbyn is anti-EU, but his party - particularly the membership - is very much pro-Remain, and I could see JC agreeing to remain to keep the membership loyal.
Brings me on to - funniest thing yesterday for me was watching Ian Lavery, Labour Chair being asked something like "if Labour had won the vote of no-confidence and a General Election had been called, what would Labour's policy be on the EU - Remain or try to get a deal to Leave?". A: it'll be down to our membership to come up with a policy.
Too weird. Labour have been watching the debate on the EU for 2+ years and still can't say what their policy is!
Edit: watched BBC2's Politics Live show lunchtime. Tim Shipman of the Sunday Times suggested Corbyn would be happy for Brexit to occur as long as it wasn't pinned on him.

By accusing the European Research Group (ERG) of thwarting Brexit by voting down Mrs May’s deal, the Environment Secretary appears to have sounded the death knell on his leadership hopes.
As one irate backbencher told the Telegraph: “Like Mrs May’s deal, Michael is a dead duck, a lost cause. He’s played fast and loose and now he’s completely discredited.”
------------
Politics seems devoid of inspirational characters at the moment. Having said that, I was watching a BBC2 programme last night about Hugo Chavez - huge personality and look how that turned out.
