One more piece of anecdotal evidence. There's been a case of Covid-19 in my yard. (For perspective: The "yard" is a gated community with almost 100 apartment buildings, so it is more populous than many English villages. Most urban people in China live in complexes like this.) Initially, the management company of the complex informed all residents that several people in the same family had tested positive. Later, one of the guards at the gate told us that in fact everyone in the family of 7 had been confirmed positive. That building is under lockdown, but residents of other buildings remain free to come and go, subject to temperature checks of course. Curiously, the government's published statistics only mention one case in this complex. When asked about it, the guard admitted that the official figures only count one case per family, no matter how many people are actually infected. Note that this may only be a local practice. I have no way of knowing if this kind of falsification is widespread. In recent weeks, I've sold all of my equity investments. I also have a couple of small short positions (in Intel and Hilton Hotels) and might add more, depending on how things develop. I might be overreacting, but well, we'll see soon. According to WHO, it seems Jiangsu isn't too bad. So far 631 cases & 0 deaths for 80Mil people region. I know, I shouldn't believe all the numbers, but I do believe is not as bad as Hubei. www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/situation-reports/20200221-sitrep-32-covid-19.pdf?sfvrsn=4802d089_2Other places like IRAN is concerning. 5 deaths reported out of 28 confirmed cases. The first 2 cases from IRAN were reported as deaths.

Sydney Morning Herald reporting "Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin asked the city's 2.5 million residents to stay indoors". Be interesting to see how that works out in a free society

Be interesting to see how that works out in a free society I do wonder why North Korea was the first country shut the borders while South Korea reacted so late. Even Russia was very cautious about the situation early on.

Be interesting to see how that works out in a free society I don't know for sure but likely emergency powers exist as they do in the UK supposedly to keep people safe. I'd be interested to discuss (not in this thread) what it means to be a "free society".

Every cloud has a silver lining. At least for the green/Extinction Rebellion brigade who will welcome fewer aircraft flying... www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/markets/article-8028349/IATA-Coronavirus-outbreak-cost-airline-industry-30billion.htmlAdded to China's huge reduction in car journeys and their curtailed productivity, is it a step too far to suggest Covid-19 might turn out to be overall beneficial for the planet? Nature's great equaliser? Mother Nature is rather good at creating equilibrium. I'm not suggesting ER are actively praying for a pandemic, but there's bound to be one or two extremist nutters hoping to court fame as the next superspreader… to say nothing of our home-grown jihadi vengefuls.

48 hours ago I noted South Korea had jumped from 31 to 82, now 346 with 2 deaths.
South Korea says the number of new coronavirus cases in the country has more than doubled in one day.Officials said on Saturday that 229 new cases had been confirmed since Friday, raising the total to 433.

BBC reporting "Coronavirus: Italy imposes strict lockdown in outbreak hotspots", appears to affect about 50,000 people in a dozen towns. Follows on from 2 deaths, from 79 cases. Same article says South Korea now has 550 cases (increase of more than 100).
One bit of good news ( here) is that the mortality rate from 'closed cases' (i.e those with a final outcome, death/recovery) is now 10%, whereas it had been 19% a while back.

Israel has taken dramatic measure too. The plane landed from South Korea has to return. Over 50% of cases in South Korea are linked to the religious cult. Over 600 cases now. amp.cnn.com/cnn/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-02-23-20-hnk-intl/index.html

Does anyone know the answer to this? :
If several countries suffer from a major outbreak similar to that in Wuhan, does that mean it is virtually guaranteed for the remaining countries to suffer outbreaks at some point unless a vaccine is developed before then?
I have a feeling the answer is "no" but I don't understand why not.
I'm assuming once an outbreak takes place in a country it remains there for a very long period and/or forever. Then anyone who visits from an unaffected population is likely to carry it back to whence they came on their return aren't they?

4 new cases from the cruise ship evacuees announced today Apparently they were all fine when they boarded the plane. I think that statement could be interpreted incorrectly. I think it means they were all asymptomatic, to the limits of the checks made immediately before boarding the flight, and presumably were also all clear w.r.t. tests for virus presence when those were last done, which one assumes was not immediately prior to the flight but x number of days beforehand.
They may well have been what you meant, but there could have been an intended implication that they all became infected on the flight.
