Good time to invest in face masks. even better time to buy them.... It's probably a bit late to get hold of quality face masks / respirators for protection against infection. According to NHS, they are only good if worn properly without contacting patients. You need full protective gears in close contact. It's better to follow NHS guidance www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/

Apparently they were all fine when they boarded the plane. I think that statement could be interpreted incorrectly. I think it means they were all asymptomatic, to the limits of the checks made immediately before boarding the flight, and presumably were also all clear w.r.t. tests for virus presence when those were last done, which one assumes was not immediately prior to the flight but x number of days beforehand.
They may well have been what you meant, but there could have been an intended implication that they all became infected on the flight.
They weren't showing any symptoms when the boarded the plane

Good time to invest in face masks. even better time to buy them.... That may be easier said than done, at least at non-rip off pricing.
N95 (FFP2) and N99 (FFP3) respirator masks have been pretty much sold out in the UK since before I started this thread at the end of January. I managed to secure a box of ten N95 respirators at normal pricing but when I tried for a second box a few days later they had all gone. I have heard some are selling them individually on ebay at a huge markup - see the following website for normal pricing (generally for boxes of ten) - clicking through to the detailed page will reveal the 'out of stock' message for each version
The vast majority of the world supply for respirators (and surgical masks, plus other medical supplies) is from China. There is little to no chance of any further supplies being available for many months - any non-China manufacturers will be contracted now for sole supply to governments. Any availability shown on Amazon will almost certainly be for delivery from China months in the future.
The thing to note is they are intended to be single use, and whilst limited re-use is probably possible, the limit is around four hours use before moisture from your breath starts to degrade performance (particularly in cold weather I guess). I've seen suggestions that a supply of 30 to 50 per member of your household should be considered.

I bought this a couple of weeks ago: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004OYQ4LC/ref=pe_3187911_189395841_TE_3p_dp_1It has increased in price by about 50% since then but that isn't huge considering the situation. I already had the non-organic version for when doing the odd job around the house and what I like is that there is an in-built method to test for air pressure leaks. Still, I haven't got a scooby whether corona would get through but figured it would protect the family if we entered a "black death" situation. No doubt someone is going to tell me I've wasted my money and I should have got the type of mask you see people wearing in the news... Edit: Wonder why this company isn't doing particularly well? www.google.com/search?tbm=fin&sxsrf=ALeKk01a5FeZtzWCBiU67JTr8wqRoA6-YQ:1582503197849&q=NYSE:+MMM&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAONgecRoyi3w8sc9YSmdSWtOXmNU4-IKzsgvd80rySypFJLgYoOy-KR4uLj0c_UNzKuyK1IKeRaxcvpFBrtaKfj6-gIAp7KPe0YAAAA&biw=1194&bih=982#scso=_tRVTXpvVN96X1fAPr560kAE1:0

I've seen Hand Sanitizer Dispenser been installed recently near lifts in certain residential apartment blocks in London. Not sure if the property Management firm made the decision based on recent news.

Not sure if the property Management firm made the decision based on recent news. You would need to make its use compulsory by everyone and at every floor as it is only effective for a short time as little as 2 minutes.

Talking of hand hygiene, I started thinking a bit more on the subject during my weekly supermarket run a few days ago.
Lets suppose the trolley handle is contaminated .... first stop fruit & veg ... mostly plastic wrapped, but the brocoli needed hands on. Does 2.5 min in the microwave kill coronavirus ? Can it persist on the skin of bananas or onions or carrots (to later transfer back to hands). Next stop Milk ... does a standard milk carton handle represent a 'smooth surface' ? Possibly not, but a wine bottle presumably does. Lost count of the number of times I touched my face. Through checkout touching wallet and loyaty card + credit card; over £30 so needed to key in PIN. Out to car, unlock with large plastic remote and lift boot lid. Return trolley and retrieve pound coin into pocket. From jacket pocket remove the invisible bottle of hand santiser and disinfect hands. Get in car ... oh ... I've just retrieved my smooth plastic remote/ignition key from my pocket .... oh ... last touched before I santised my hands. Drive home. Wash hands (for real this time, and normal given I'm about to unpack and handle food). Pick up bottle of wine ... oh .. last touched at the checkout by me and the till operator.
Whilst obviously good advice to keep hands as clean as possible at all times, in practical terms if you encounter heavy contamination its going to be close to impossible to avoid spreading it far and wide.

Remember your surgical gloves. I read somewhere that gloves are more effective than masks. What tends to happens is yours hands touch everything then hand to mouth, nose & eyes.
or if you want to go the full monty:-

Sold out most of my share holdings at 8am this morning...pocketed good returns over the last 18 months so cant complain,
Price of hard drives up 25 percent due to lack of production.Pictures of empty streets and subways in China....South Korea experiencing increase in cases and Italian town going into lockdown with borders closing between countries.Only country ive got exposure to is America at present.
Batten down the hatches I think

Never wrong to take a profit. However, I'm investing on a 10-20 year horizon so I am still buying all the way down.

Thing is, it's easy to say "sell now, wait for it to settle down", but then the danger is that the waters either always look too dangerous to go back into, or stocks shoot up before you get there and you don't want to invest because you've missed the boat. I'm looking to invest more if we see substantial falls. As it is, whilst -2.7% for VWRL is a fair drop, we were lower on the 31st-Jan. Doesn't feel great value for the potential start of a pandemic. (this is my problem, I never see anything as a good enough buying opportunity!)

so FTSE100 is down > 3% this morning. Whether I have missed the boat or not is another matter.

Italy now has 6 Coronavirus deaths according to the Telegraph. Meanwhile, South Korea has 833 cases/8 deaths ( link)
Let's hope people in the affected regions haven't been travelling.
michaelc To your earlier point, if people had been taking international flights from areas in Italy/S Korea (or elsewhere) before they were known hotspots, would seem to me to increase the chance of outbreaks in other countries. E.g. I doubt travellers to the UK from northern Italy have been seen as high risk until the last week or so.

This. Only a fool tries to time the market. Only a fool behaves irrationally and takes a binary view of risk. Selling the majority of your holdings because of the virus ? Seriously ? Brokers love these sort of people, more churn than an ice cream factory in their portfolio, bring on the commission $$$ ! Either a person is a serious long-term investor or they are not. I've said it before and I'll say it again. By all means adjust your portfolio weightings if medium-term conditions deserve it. But going all-in/all-out is incredibly naïve and does you more harm than good on a long-term timeline. It's a nice buying opportunity just traded a couple of million in "quality" shares that were fluctuating 5-10 after spread and swings like wind chime in storm Dennis
