I'm really wavering... Cut losses and sell, or buy in? That Worldometer link from a page or two back gives me a fairly serious lean towards buying. Just pondering that myself (although not considering selling). I suppose it boils down to asking myself which would least hurt. If I buy now and the market falls another 40%, or if I don't buy now and we're 25% up and rising by Autumn. Decisions, decisions..... catching a falling knife takes practice.

Iran: In a statement on state TV, Iran's Health Minister Alireza Raisi said that 66 people have now died.
"The definite latest numbers we have are 523 new infections and 12 new deaths, so the total number of those infected is 1,501 until now and the number of deaths is 66," he said.
and yet: - Health Minister was infected - as was an MP (or whatever they are called)
and now:
An official from the council that advises Iran's supreme leader has died of the coronavirus, Iranian state radio reports. Mohammad Mirmohammadi was a member of the Expediency Council, the Associated Press says. He is the first senior official to die from the virus, but several others have also tested positive.
So, do we really have any confidence at all in the numbers being stated by Iran ? Does it even have the means for effective testing on any scale ?

On the face of it I'd agree with you but when I read it, it made me think that if you invite the major of London, what about the major of Manchester? And birmingham (if there is one). Then once you're done with the largest citites, shouldn't you then invite representatives from Bristol, Liverpool, Leeds etc ? If you just invited one major from the largest city you'd get a lot of flack from the other ones.

Agreed, a line has to be drawn somewhere, but the cynic in me suggests that it's because he's Labour.

Well, Iranians don't have confidence in government, not just the numbers. What's the objective to close all schools for 3 days? www.reuters.com/article/us-china-health-iran-education/all-schools-in-iran-to-close-for-three-days-over-coronavirus-concerns-health-minister-idUSKCN20M1W8According to Masoud Mardani, a member of the National Committee on Infectious Diseases at the Iranian Health Ministry in this article: The use of masks and gloves on the passageways would spread the coronavirus and infectious diseases throughout the city because these items are being abandoned on the streets.

I've wondered for a while now what the issue is with masks. Advice seems to be they don't help but people wear them anyway and more to the point health professionals wear them. "Ahhh...but they are trained..." might be the response. Well what is this training and why isn't it shared? I've long suspected the reason is that in the UK alone, there are 65 million people so we'd need about 750 million masks every week assuming each person used one per day so could well be more. I suspect there aren't that many, many/most are probably made in China (made that up but most everything else is) and I certainly doubt we in the UK can make any so where would we import them from if they are needed everywhere? Hence why I suspect the government doesn't want everyone to don a mask.

Masks do have side effects, especially in people with existing health problems, i.e. the very people most at risk in case of infection. For example this paper looked at the effect of wearing N95 masks (the kind that can somewhat reliably filter the virus) for 4 hours at a time on people with terminal renal disease and found: Consider, for example, the millions of people driving cars in China while wearing masks (as it is mandatory), the well documented effect of hypoxemia on reaction times, and how common traffic accidents are here. Statistically, there must be multiple people effectively killed by face mask use. (Of course, this should be offset against people saved by face masks.) Also, it is known that SARS-CoV-2 can enter the body through the eyes, so you'd also need something like ski goggles to be safe. Personally, as I've never expected the containment measures to work in the end, I reuse the same disposable N90 mask every day, on which I've loosened the outflow valve flap with a pen to make it more comfortable to breathe. It's purely for show. I would not wear a mask if I were free to choose.

Hence why I suspect the government doesn't want everyone to don a mask. Masks are a good idea for those who might have the virus as they may reduce them spreading it. If you haven't got the virus they may have a limited effect in stopping you getting it, but they don't work much once they get damp and may even harbour the virus on the damp mask. But they may help stop people touching their face with their hands which spreads the virus from contaminated surfaces. And then you have to dispose of the mask without contaminating yourself or anything else. It's not entirely black and white. Health professionals have to get really up close and personal to people who may have the virus, literally have them breathing in their faces (maybe coughing and sneezing as well) so masks are important, normally we don't get that close to people in everyday life. And as you say supply could become a problem. Edit: Crossed with above and I was mainly talking about disposable masks.

I thought the below statement was "interesting"
The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, says the new coronavirus "is a unique virus with unique features". "This virus is not influenza. We have never before seen a pathogen that can transfer between individuals [so easily]."
in the interests of balance, he also made it clear he thought it was still containable, and i'm posting this purely as an interesting observation about its characteristics.
