Who remembers 'The Twelve Monkeys'? (I thought Brad Pitt was jolly good in that, didn't you?) This virus reminds me of that movie called outbreak. Came out in the mid 90s. And the virus carrier was a monkey.

The ususal caveats apply that random stuff on the internet may be deliberate misinformation, but this link which purports to be the translation of FB post made by a doctor in Bergamo, Northern Italy is worth a read through in the context of the more widely reported info that the health service in northern Italy is struggling. A pretty grim picture of what awaits the NHS in all likelihood.

Always the bearer of cheery news Mr C ! I'm a cup half full type person and am definitely worried. One thing that helps is that China seems to have completely flatlined. Yes the lockdown their probably helps its just surprising its barely (relatively speaking) going up at all. Not sure what other positive news there is. Is half of Europe including the UK just waiting a few days for their 200+ numbers to move to 5000 and beyond ?

Is half of Europe including the UK just waiting a few days for their 200+ numbers to move to 5000 and beyond ? IMO, broadly yes, although the UK is I think probably ahead of the game regarding testing compared to many countries, and hence is probably better able to contain (slow) the advance. But France & Germany now have 1000+ confirmed cases, which will be starting to put pressure on their resources. The next bad news though is likely to come from the US when their hospitals start to come under pressure. The significant bit in that Italian doctor's message was "They followed all the recommendations given: a week or ten days at home with a fever without going out to prevent contagion, but now they can't take it anymore. They don't breathe enough, they need oxygen."Given the way the US healthcare system is financed, many will likely attempt to tough it out at home, until they can't.

I dont understand why Italy is more affected than other eu countries? Something just doesn't add up. Church attendance high, holy communion probably a factor? I understand (not a goer myself) Catholic church in UK has already announced no holy water, shared chalices, hand shaking etc. because of corona.

here's a paper on it jvi.asm.org/content/79/3/1966That's great. I guess there will a run on L-arginine supplements now.
I am not sure how effective supplements would be. I am guessing in gas form directly breathed in would be best.

Or you could try drinking garlic water or any other suggestions on the net. Even if it had an effect on one virus no reason to suppose it would work on another, the flu vaccine doesn't even necessarily work on other strains of the flu virus let alone a different virus.

Not sure how reliable this is or if anyone has further info but maybe there's some hope. "BEIJING, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese experts, based on the result of clinical trials, have confirmed that Chloroquine Phosphate, an antimalarial drug, has a certain curative effect on the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), a Chinese official said here Monday." www.xinhuanet.com/english/2020-02/17/c_138792545.htm

Not such a mystery to me. Covid-19 mainly targeting pensioners is a godsend to our government. Offloading a few tens of thousands of us from the pensions bill would help balance the books no end. If our government were at all concerned, they would be building emergency ward facilities right now, as China did. It suits the bigger picture not to. And it's far cheaper to advertise hand washing, while spinning the fiction about the NHS being all geared up ready to cope. Next thing you'll be telling us that it's an instant answer to the age old problem of reform of the house of Lords.

The epicentre is in the less religious North of the country. In the winter more popular than the South with Chinese tourists.
