I have a self employed friend who has been ill twice in last 18 months both times with symptoms that would match Covid, he refuses to get tested in case it is, in which case he would be ordered to isolate and he says as a one man self employed person he can't afford to isolate.

I'm sure that has cheered up registerme no end.... That made me laugh . And yeah, I have a pulse oximter. Re PCR tests and Omicron, I don't know. I recall watching or reading something that suggested that current PCR tests could "pre-filter" (?) for Omicron, but that for absolute verification further testing needed to be done.
Something along the lines of "if it has this it's not Omicron, if it has that it could be"? Anyway, PCR tests are on order... That's true but only around half the testing centres have that ability. Omicron: How do you detect it?

So... I was due to have my booster jab this morning. But I've had a bit of a sniffle and a mild cough for a couple of days, so I did another lateral flow test this morning. And it was positive . Two weeks before Christmas. With a broken washing machine, that was due to be replaced next Wednesday. Really sorry to hear that. Keep that Oximeter to hand. I'd see if you can find a way of having the washing machine still delivered and fitted as long as you tell them beforehand. Hope the PCR test comes up negative and shows the LFT to be a false positive.

Meanwhile, the UK mix and match booster program might be good enough to “neutralise” omicron like the “super immune”

Damn convenient and utterly transparent news IMO. I'll be having a booster as soon as I get back in early Jan, but this sort of thing will Royally reduce other people to do likewise. The real hope and touch wood the likely hope is that whilst omicron trounces delta, it also vastly increases the percent of sufferers who experience a cold thus ending the pandemic. (Terrible news for many scientists)

It seems omicron may be less nasty, but it may be more nasty for young people (specifically children) and although it is less nasty, because there will be a huge amount of cases the number of bad cases will still be high.

This is another example of the vague waffle you get from the media. Two vaccine doses doesn't stop you getting alpha, delta or any of the other variants either. Another example from Sky news this afternoon. They said there could be a total of 1 million Omicron cases by the end of the month. But if Delta carries on at the same 50,000 cases a day for the last 21 days of December then that will be 1 million cases any way.

But if Delta carries on at the same 50,000 cases a day for the last 21 days of December then that will be 1 million cases any way. I think that depends on whether you read past the headline or not. The meaningful statement in the article is:" The analysis is based on limited data, but showed a dramatic drop in effectiveness for the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and a significant drop off for two doses of Pfizer." As I recall the data - depending on which vaccine - was something like 60-85% effectiveness in stopping meaningful infection (and 95% prevention of sufficiently severe disease to lead to hospitilsation, or thereabouts). So a reasonable interpretation is that protection against infection is substantially reduced to the extent it does not provide significant protection against infection.

Nope. First time I've actually tested for it and been positive. There was a time late in 2020 when my lodger had it, but I didn't bother with a test seeing as at the time the rules said you had to isolate regardless. My mistake. I remember you were almost certain you had it back then (but obviously never had it confirmed). p2pindependentforum.com/post/406075p2pindependentforum.com/post/406968Whether or not this is dose two, I wish you all the best.

I'm sure you'll be okay but the timing's a bit of a pi**er. Keep safe.

Is this the same AZ that the non peer reviewed report says 'The early observations for two doses of AstraZeneca are particularly likely to be unreliable'? PS: got my booster tomorrow.
