Test and Trace have finally woken up. More than 48 hours after my positive result. The website is so infuriating I rage quit. EDIT: One example:- It wants to know where I've been, and what I've done. Which is perfectly reasonable in the circumstances. I choose shopping from the drop down. I choose Sainsburys from the drop down. It wants the address. To use the address finder you need to know the name, street name, and postcode. If I knew that I'd know the ******* address wouldn't I . £20 bn ? £ 30 bn ? £40 bn ? and still counting Di ldo Hard oning must be laughing her socks off.

It is worrying that the new variant is already causing hospital admissions, although it is said to be a milder virus. Of course if it causes a huge number of cases there will be a percentage of those that will be admitted to hospital, which may become difficult for the NHS to cope with. If only one person is hospitalised who happened to be in hospital because he had a heart attack due to chronic high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels it wouldn't be worrying at all (from a pandemic point of view). which is why it would probably not have got mentioned if that was the case. But if one sees govt conspiracies around every corner then no doubt that is how one will interpret things.

www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/news-events/epidemiological-update-omicron-data-9-decemberCould someone explain why the UK is not one of the best country to prepare against omicron despite the early start of booster drive? As of the 9th December, the UK has more confirmed Omicron cases than all the EU countries combined? Is it because we are slow to vaccinate the under 18s? or is it the isolation rules are not strict enough? Where do you want to start:
- we test more than the rest so are bound to find more
- the number of flights that BA and Virgin run to SA each day is greater than any other EU country
- the EU don't have so many self entitled kn*bheads, so the rules are better followed (did anyone see Steve Baker on TV today saying he would vote against the modest increase in restrictions?)
- they have stricter rules than we do

They have included some commentary from the head of the UK Health Security Agency: "Dr Susan Hopkins, chief medical adviser for the UK Health Security Agency, said she expected to see an increase in the number of people in hospital with Omicron infection.
So you need to be head of the UK Health Security Agency to work out that the number of people in hospital with Omicron is going to increase?
I despair, I really do.
Uh, no. Obviously. Which was my point: crying out to have some "scientists" to comment on a ministers statement that 'the first cases have been seen in hospital' was a pretty pointless thing to be asking for.

I guess if the BBC reporting the rather asinine fact that a minister has stated that the first O cases have been seen in hospital is deemed as 'scaremongering', I can only assume that their broadcasting the PMs statement at 8pm is tantamount to being a conspirator to a Nightmare Before Christmas.
P.S. If you are in a position to do so, then if you were even mildly interest in looking to see if you can provide volunteer help at any of your local vaccine centres (including GP surgeries), now would be a very good time to do so. In effect, a challenging program with about 7 weeks to run has just got compressed into 3. It is probably not achievable. But I suspect your local vaccination centre could do with a few extra bods to help with the mundane non-clinical stuff.

Yep, twice a many per capita as the next major EU country France & 5 times Germany, Also add we sequence more so will identify positive cases as Omnicron rather than just generic positive covid case

Just watched Johnson's latest broadcast. He knows he was popular when he ramped up the vaccines early in 2020 so he is trying to do more of the same as well as evoke tones of his Churchill hero. Public mood badly misread IMO.

- Had my first 2 jabs at the Exeter mega vax site. You check in at reception and then stand in the queue for the jabbing booth. Before you get to the booth there was a woman with an Ipad who went through all the health and safety stuff. In the booth were 2 people, the one with the needle and one who put the sticker on the vaccination card. So it was literally jab somebody and then who's next.
- Had my booster today at the mega vax station in Taunton. After reception you go straight to the booth where the lady with the needle gives the health and safety talk. After the jab she spent ages trying to peel a pre-printed label from a sheet to stick on my vaccination card. All very inefficient.

Why do you think that is ? I don't know, but possibly part of the problem is that they are allowed to get away with it in this country. As a couple of examples:
- Everyone on an aircraft must wear a mask unless they are eating or drinking. If you have a night time flight with Americam airlines cabin crew will wake you up if your mask slips down over your nose. When I flew to Lanzarote recently the passenger opposite took off his mask to eat breakfast and left it off for the following 3 hours while taking occasional sips from a glass of wine. A passenger who had a mask when boarding the plane reappeared without a mask to queue for the toilets. Rather than reprimand him cabin crew had a friendly chat with him about what he was going to do on holiday.
- Supermarkets in UK won't enfore mask wearing as they say the police should enforce the law (think they might take a different attitude if the maskless customer started shop lifting). In Lanzarote if you don't have a mask on you won't get 2 steps inside a supermarket without somebody challenging you.
I expect that every EU country will have their version of Piers Corbyn, it's just we appear to have more than most.

Agreed, the site I went to in Wales was very inefficient, 3 check in desks then a queue for next step but if desk 2 or 3 finished before desk 1 they didn't let you join the next queue. Each vaccinator did a chunk of paperwork with you then went to collect the vaccine which took at least 5 minutes ! I was asked the same questions repeatedly, I had my forehead scanned twice to see if I had a temperature. Name, address, phone number, what was I there for ! It felt like it needed to be organised rather than what it was, I do think that to achieve the target in 3 weeks they need to deliver a million jabs a day, including Christmas and boxing day, and lets be honest it will take several days to ramp up. the big issue is under 40's where less that 75% have had even one dose.

But if one sees govt conspiracies around every corner then no doubt that is how one will interpret things. My point was even if it is a milder variant but very infectious there will be a huge number of cases, and a perhaps small in percentage terms, but large in actual numbers will be hospitalised. Even if some/most of these have other problems which are exacerbated by Covid (or make Covid worse) it makes no difference to the NHS, that could still be overwhelmed. Trying to slow the spread seems like a very reasonable objective. And since we still have limited knowledge about this variant including possible adverse effects on children (reported in South Africa) and possible vaccine resistance I don't see that we can afford to wait and see how bad it will be before taking any action.
