registerme I guess if we all stopped spending hours posting here and used it to get/deliver shopping to the over 70s, it'd be a case of problem solved.

Some thoughtful commentary from Lord Blunkett on the dangers of forcing self-isolation on the over 70's (he is 72)
My father is a fit & active 85 year old. As a former general builder he helps the elderly in the local community. Last week alone he replaced a fence post, repaired a broken gate & fitted a new toilet syphon unit. I can't remember a time when he sat on his backside all day in front of a TV or newspaper. I fear for his physical & mental wellbeing if he's forced (he'll need to be) to remain at home for up to four months. Wow. Any chance of giving out his phone number/email?

Blunkett: " I don’t know of any evidence to suggest that pensioners spread Covid-19 more virulently than younger people either.
In fact, since older people appear more apt to display the symptoms of coronavirus, it seems they are less likely to be silent carriers." He's completely missed the point. It's not about pensioners spreading the virus but avoiding catching it, thereby putting additional pressure on the NHS at the wrong time. The idea is to flatten the peak pressure, not increase it. Foolish nonsense to publish when politicians should be supporting the scientific and political consensus.

Care to expand? (It looks consistent to me).

Some may think this is a bit of a conspiracy theory, but is there any truth in the rumour that the current food shortages are a deliberate ploy by the government to get us prepared for Brexit? I don’t think so. This is a global crisis. Brexit is of a less magnitude.

Come the summer and the regular inevitable UK water shortages, watch the "essential 20 seconds hand washing several times a day" advice change dramatically.
Which groups will be asked to self-isolate from the taps, to flatten the demand on another woefully under-resourced UK utility?

Too right; it'll go from "Sing Happy Birthday" twice to "Just say the person's name twice"

Telegraph reports is as "People aged over 70 face up to four months in self-isolation and the public risk being taken into custody or being given a £1,000 fine if they refuse to be tested or quarantined for suspected coronavirus." which I read (maybe incorrectly) that the £1,000 fine does NOT apply to those over 70 who fail to self-isolate but to those who "refuse to be tested or quarantined for suspected coronavirus" Leave aside the question of fines and testing etc, how are we meant to feed and otherwise look after 7.5 million people who are compelled to self-isolate for an extended period of time? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demography_of_the_United_Kingdom#Age_structureIn my immediate community we have two ladies in their seventies, one couple in their 60s, and at least two families with young babies. I already shop for one of the old ladies, and I am happy to extend that to the other, and more generally I am sure we will pull together to sort things out but a) there will be communities that have a higher proportion of those in need and b) not all communities will (be able to) pull together like this . Don't know how it would work either. But based on that link, 11.8% of population > 70 and worth considering 58%-ish of that demographic indicated Tory voting intention ( link). I believe that the unbridled self-interest of our current government in maintaining power will ensure this is carefully considered.

Our water utilities are some of the best in the world, second only to Germany within Europe, Germans paying 15% more for that privilege.

As we seem to experience most years now (but never used to).

why is the govt ONLY NOW coming out and saying, umm we need more ventilators: I know, lets try and build them in short order. We have some car companies: I'm sure they could switch production over
They have had several weeks to be actioning that.

The most robust response to water shortages I can recall was banning hose pipes some years ago. I doubt it will go as far as changing the advice on hand washing this summer.

This will always be their priority and the corporate press will continue to support their intentions. The result of your linked poll suggests that younger generation is more immune to mindless propaganda than the older one, but main stream media also tend to adapt to latest trends. It remains to be seen if they will be able to catch up with developments and control peoples minds in the same way in future or not.

".... unbridled self-interest of our current government"I recall a certain Mr Bliar took that one to new and unprecendented heights? In fact, he made it both an Art Form and a Science!
