adriancsomeone mentioned because of ba.2, the UK was lucky enough to have hit by BA.1 first, reinfected by BA.2 from recovery of BA.1 is rare. before the health system there couldn’t cope with the virus, the vaccination rate in the elderly population is low, even when the deaths are surging, majority of the elderly have not been vaccinated. 🤦♂️ plus natural immunity in the population was almost 0 prior omicron due to the unique covid strategy According to government source over there, two oral drugs for treating Covid will respectively be delivered to the special region in March and May this year at the earliest.

"There are also warnings that the mass movement of people could in itself contribute to a jump in the spread of infectious diseases like Covid – especially as only around 35 per cent of Ukraine’s population have had two coronavirus jabs." I wonder how many of those eager to host Ukrainian refugees are aware of that?
Just asking. I have a great deal of sympathy for Ukraine and have just finished polishing up the English in a letter drafted by a Kyiv resident who has sought refuge in Croatia and is trying to relocate to "European Union land". (He may have forgotten that this no longer includes the UK.)

I see that New Zealand are allowing fully vaccinated Brits in from 1st May. At first site it appears a strange decision given their infection rate yesterday was about 5 times ours.
Also, KFC sales in China plunge due to the lockdowns associated with the increasing number of cases. Given that the Chinese vaccines are not very good against Omicron, I wonder if the sticky brown stuff is about to hit the fan. As many countries such as Vietnam and New Zealand have shown, trying to remain covid free doesn't work.

With obvious implications for neighbouring Shenzen, and thus the rest of China.

I believe the people making decisions behind the wall had make adjustment to keep death numbers “low”..
I read that central gov had “revised” the test, trace, isolate and treatment plans on the 15th March. optimise procedure for early detection, traffic light system for severity standardise antiviral treatment improve traditional Chinese medical treatment adjust management of isolation and discharge.
The financial hub in the east has “contributed” tremendous amount of data to optimise their policy.

China is open about their covid numbers not including asymptomatic positive cases. So they are already probably an order of magnitude away from the number where it measured in countries like the UK

Well, it’s hard for any country to record all the covid infections, most have not been reported/traced unless there is a compulsory testing order in place with adequate testing capacity.
Surveillance might be a better option to monitor any thing “odd”.
Many media behind the wall are unwilling to post “numbers”, the consequences of “fake” news are serious.
There was a time the leading university in the special region stopped updating all the covid numbers, no clear reasons “why” but never stopped them doing “research”.

Lots of disturbing headlines on News Now. Increase in cases, warnings. (This page is updated regularly, so if someone clicks on the link in a week or month's time, all may be better - or not.) A friend visited today to say that her parents (in their 70s) and other family members have Covid; she didn't seem concerned, but is keeping her distance.
This morning I popped into my local chemist for repeat prescriptions and casually asked if they would be doing fourth jabs (as they had done thirds). The assistant said not. A larger chemist nearby is still partitioned in to two, one for regular business, the other for jabs, but the latter always seems empty when I pass. With speculation about a fourth jab for non-priority groups this autumn, perhaps it will come into its own again in the autumn?

well spring booster's for the over 75's and those immunosuppressed starts from Monday in England (or maybe before, but at my local that's when we are starting from) I personally think we are in the vinegar last throes of the first wave now. At least hope so. But the stats tend to point that way. thankfully
