What amuses me is that the production of receipts has almost dried up. Instead of automatically issuing receipts after any transaction, the shop assistant just stands there waiting for me to clear off.
I now have to ask for a receipt.
Which leads to much rummaging under the counter as they try to find "my" receipt.
Waitrose story: I nipped in for a handful of goods (arm and a leg time...), paid for them at the till and stuffed them into the shopping bag. Had to ask for the receipt.
Approaching the exit, I remembered that I needed frozen chips. Smart turn right and back into the store.
Grabbed the chips, avoided the busy tills and headed for the sin (tobacco and lottery tickets) till which was quiet.
As the transaction was underway, I placed my bag on the counter and let go of the handles. It carefully toppled sideways, exposing the Waitrose branded goodies.
"Hmmm" she said. "Have you paid for those?".
"Yes" I said.
"And do you have the receipt?" she asked.
Reader. I almost bit...
