Is there any reason why? Or just that's the way societal pressure has historically pushed people? FWIW, my computer science degree course in the late '80s, early '90s was majority female. Majority? Like over 50%? Where? Yes, majority does mean over 50%... London.

Meanwhile the Numpty from Newport who threw away a hard disk with 8000 bitcoins on it, is preparing a high court bid to sue the Council for £495 million because they won't let him excavate the tip. www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/im-suing-council-495m-because-30106009loved this bit "That would be £41m based on today's rate but in the future it could be hundreds of millions. If they had spoken to me in 2013 this place would look like Las Vegas now. Newport would look like Dubai. That's the kind of opportunity they've missed."
he thinks you can make a city like Dubai by investing 40 million ! he also doesn't understand economics £41 million now hundreds of millions in the future, yep but if you spend it now you have no interest in future value As I've said before The drive may not even be there it have have been spotted and reused or thrown in scrap metal and recycled the platters may be distorted beyond use or even smashed. there may be dozens even hundreds of hard drives in the tip If he doesn't find it then what, excavate other areas. If you were financing this ( legal action and the dig ) what percentage would you want. I'm not an experts at this things, but considering the costs, £10 million plus, and that they are taking all the risk, and the odds of recovering the disk and the data being able to be recovered I think I'd want 60% plus.

According to the article, he's expecting to clear 30% after giving the council 10% and the rest to his backers and recovery team. It's fascinating to learn he's recruited the council's former head of landfill as part of his team. Sounds like the right man for the job, with potentially a massive pension boost on his horizon.

A woman who sued her former employer over not being given a leaving card lost her case when it was revealed it had been hidden from her after only three people signed it.

It feels like this story has been kicking around for years.
I have no knowledge of Bitcoin, so am a bit confused by this.
- Are the coins stored on the hard drive, or are they in a wallett elsewhere and it is the key that is on the hard drive?
- How does he prove the coins exist and they are his?

On a Crypto related theme, I see that the administrators of FTX (who went pop a couple of years ago, with about $8bn of investor cash missing) are about to make a full payout (including interest) to those who held coins on the platform. Initially I wondered how this could be, but then realised that people are being reimbursed based on the 2022 value of their Bitcoin investments, rather than at today's level (which is treble the level from 2022).

and some of the investors are claiming to have been swindled as the value has gone up, presumably they'd be screaming if BitCoin had dropped 80%

the key to the wallet is stored on the drive, I believe it is assumed if you have the key to the wallet the contents are yours

the key to the wallet is stored on the drive, I believe it is assumed if you have the key to the wallet the contents are yours Yes if you know the numbers you can prove ownership. Whether they are further encrypted in a wallet which is somewhere else not sure if anyone knows the answer to that. Not sure it matters as if the latter then presumably the chap has access to it or even a copy of it. What I find interesting is if an alien from space could watch us, what would he think we were doing looking in a tip for a sequence of numbers? Even if they were found, what does that mean from an economic point of view? Does the world gain more wealth - presumably not. Somewhat analagous to the meaning of destroying any regular currency (fiat currency in the jargon). If I burn a £20 note does everyone else get very slightly richer ? So maybe I've answered my own question - if this guy finds his digital keys does everyone else in the world get a little poorer? Or is it mainly concentrated in his town where he makes most of his purchases?
