So reading the judgement summary. ITSM she did defame him, it did damage his reputation, she accepts what she said was untrue, though she didnt understand the meaning of what she said, but because she reasonably believed its in the public interest she doesnt have to pay damages. www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Banks-v-Cadwalladr-130622-Summary.pdfDoubt the reporting will actually mention that - edit now reflected in BBC piece

I took a slightly different slant from the same document. Not open in front of me now but along the rough lines of 2 separate assessments divided by significant change in circumstances (EC event) a) did not meet threshold for defamation but did cause damage, followed by b) now did meet threshold for defamation but did not cause any additional damage over that already inflicted in part a). Something like that anyway.
It was a really interesting case to me for a number of reasons inc electoral funding transparency (irrespective of rules), public interest consequences noted specifically in Russia report (of lack of transparency in this context), and slapp lawsuits vs independent journalism in general. All issues that transcend politics and the dreaded B-word.

Acccording to paragraph 9 of the judgement "Ms Cadwalladr has repeatedly labelled this claim as a SLAPP suit ... it is neither fair nor apt to describe this as a SLAPP suit".

My understanding is that the talk caused damage & therefore met the requirement of the defamation Act (clause 10) so is defamation, the tweet did not. With the change in circumstances the talk did not cause additional harm within the context of the change and therefore didnt meet the criteria for defamation ie the damage had already been done.

And anyone reading this would read the "..." and assume you meant he did indeed have such a relationship with the Russians. As Ilmoro explains, that is not established by this judgement. My question is, why would anyone on these forums go to the bother of relentlessly misleading people ?

Yes, on first part I am mixing up the applicability of public interest defence aren't I - serves me right for not referring back to the document before posting (and not reading it properly in the first place ). Steerpike absolutely (in the full judgement not summary link ilmoro posted) and now that's been clarified I'm not sure whether the impact or positive or negative for matters of public interest in general hereon. Possibly both!

Parliament's standards commissioner is investigating whether Labour leader Sir Keir 'squeaky clean' Starmer broke the rules by being late in registering earnings and gifts.
I can understand an Arsenal fan accepting free tickets to a game, but the bit that impressed me was that Food delivery firm Just Eat also gifted him tickets to the British Kebab Awards

Meanwhile, back in 2019, Johnson was rebuked for the year-late declaration of part-ownership of a 500 acre farm in Somerset (jointly owned with his brother, then a minister, who also failed to declare it on time). That was just four months after a rebuke for late declaration of £52k of book advance - during which he promised faithfully that everything else was up to date... www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-47854338

Class. Pure class. I've done hospitality at the Ryder Cup, at Twickenham etc., but I've NEVER been invited to the British Kebab Awards. I feel like a second class citizen: shish, I need a doner to give me tickets

Wouldnt get too excited, Rachel Reeves, Shadow Chancellor, did the same a few months ago and got off by blaming her staff. Jess Phillips, did it 17 times (including a book advance & a HIGNFY fee) but got away with it by basically claiming she was administratively incompetent

I think my favourite was Billy Connolly recalling a hair dryer with a warning not to use it in the shower.

But is there not also a possibility that being dropped into a "lower standard" school at 11 means those children get the not as great teachers. I passed the 11 plus, 99% of the kids in the grammar school were motivated to succeed, however some in the Secondary modern that were in the "just failed" group were demotivated to continue learning, they also tended to have disruptive kids in the class. Oddly though I still favour Grammar schools or an equivalent for brighter kids, one on my friends who failed the 11 plus was bullied mercilessly because he studied hard at the secondary modern.
