Putain! In WW2 the UK did not invade Ireland, as it staid neutral. When we were losing sailors and ships at a fantastic rate and could have used Ireland as a staging post we did not invade Ireland. Jesus man, your treating a as our equivalent is beyond BS!

I find it incomprehensible that Russia would actually attack Ukraine. They must have other ways to influence (or control) the political direction of Ukraine such as propaganda, threats and maybe a few untimely deaths. As others have said their populations are closely linked so it may be brother against brother.

I imagine the Balts are pretty nervous right now. As is "The West" - would be harder to let them go, being EU members and all.

"How NATO and the West have caused the war in Ukraine"So you're firmly nailing your colours to the Putin mast, along with such sound luminaries as Farage, Banks, Trump... and Laurence Fox?

A grim day . yep. Grim for everyone. Lets not forget that Putin has a massive nuclear arsenal under his control, and I'd dare to suggest that he has perhaps started to show signs of having become slightly unhinged. Two schools of thought: he has been playing everything extremely shrewdly and this is his (for now) end game, or he has become somewhat disconnected and slightly deranged and we should be even more concerned. I wish I had faith that it wasn't the latter. I'd be pretty concerned at his veiled (read nuclear) threats of consequences for "The West" if they get involved.

Extremely dangerous times. Arguably more so than the cuban missile crisis, since one has to question whether the hot seat in Moscow is currently occupied by a 'rational actor'.

One out of two is more than I would have given Trump. But yes, from a leadership perspective not the best time for this to be happening.

iirc between them Russia and Ukraine account for some 30% of the world's wheat supply. No guesses as to what this will do to the price of bread.
