Roman Abramovich has handed "stewardship and care" of Chelsea to the club's charitable foundation following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
There was a very powerful message given before the Everton v Man City game this evening. It will be interesting to see if it is replicated at the League cup (or whatever nonsense name it has this year) tomorrow afternoon, given Chelsea are playing. I am not usually that fond of sport making protests, but feel the one earlier did it well (these games are watched World wide and almost certainly in Russia) I was there and it was really moving. When Mykolenko and Zinchenko embraced................trust me, there was hardly a dry eye in the house. Suddenly the actual game didn't seem so important. (I hasten to add that it did a little later when I looked at the Premier League table! )

Well, one thing is for sure, you can't accuse the Klitchkos of being afraid of a fight. Evidence would suggest there arent many Ukrainians you could level that against. Here's a BBC report of some going for a stroll

I see that France has seized a Russian flagged cargo ship en route to St Petersburg (alleged to be taking new cars to commie land in contravention of sanctions).
But it appears that the same rules do not apply in UK

Summary of scholz's speech to bundestag: New Era and defence spending committments
I know this is slightly old news. One has to say that while it might seem a bit late in coming, this could well be a seminal moment for future German foreign & defence policy. One to be welcomed IMHO.

Oil trading is not sanctioned, though, unlike cars.

Dangerous times now. The Russian army did not settle matters within a few days means and this means they are about to face monumental push back as thousands of ex-service Poles, Latvians, Europeans, and most of all, highly motivated Ukranians assemble and push to the front. This wave of admiration is going to translate into action. Russia has already failed.
As Russian forces bog down and are forced back, the question of what orders the Russian soldiers will obey from the dictator comes into view. Russia can fire a nuclear weapon, but at whom? Central Kyiv? Would anyone obey such an order? And using a nuclear weapon would see the end of the Russian regime as that oversteps the line.

Why is the word 'special' starting to have such ominous connotations? Special alert now, after special military operation Meanwhile, slightly more positive ... possibility of talks

This is an interesting angle. Fingers crossed it's true.

Why is the word 'special' starting to have such ominous connotations? Special alert now, after special military operation Yes. Oh for Kruschev and Kennedy rather than Putin and Biden. Particularly Putin. I think 2 years of bunkering during Covid has left him rather unhinged. Lets hope to god this is only meant as a warning to not cross a particular line (the same line that NATO doesn't want to cross, direct NATO/Russian engagement of any sort) and not some other act from a lunatic. Most of all, lets hope that there are sufficient checks and balances, and some who are prepared to get between him and any order to use.

Yeah saw that. Serious courage. And also good on the Russian tank commander for not simply mowing them down. I'm just cynical enough to believe that, with the logistical problems the Russians are having, they have been ordered not to waste ammo on civilians. Yes, I am very cynical.

He's got a forward gear ... hes more likely to have shortage of fuel so wasting it going backwards isn't the logical tactical decision.

I know I am receiving incredibly one sided information that is massively pro-Ukraine and anti-Russia, but it's remarkable how badly some of Russia's newest kit has performed eg T-90s being knocked out by NLAWs.
It doesn't necessarily mean that Ukraine will "win" (can anybody "win" in a situation like this?), but it does mean the price Russia is paying is going up by the minute. It also gives me much greater confidence that NATO could handle Russia robustly should the need arise.
Of course Putin's comments about raising Russia's nuclear alert level (good job Liz!) are... pretty bloody sccary.
How can he back down? What's his way out?

As he was making the anouncement there was a camera shot of the man in charge of defence. The look on his face was just like the look on the face of Donald Trump's special advisor when Trump suggested drinking bleach could cure covid. If Putin does try to escalate signifficantly then I think he will get nobbled from within.
Also some interesting info from the Mail on line which says that since Covid started Putin has only seen the closest members of his inner circle, and only if they submit faecal samples for testing several times a week, and undergo quarrantine. It makes you wonder if the rumours of him having cancer are true
