So this is not about the embargo on goods going to Russia (as in the French stopping the cars going to Russia) it is more broadly about whether any Russian ships should be allowed to land in the UK, which has not yet been decided. I have some cargo which was meant to leave Latvia either today or tomorrow on a Russian flagged vessel bound for the UK, the shipping agent has cancelled the charter. Whether they should or shouldn't be using Russian companies is open to debate, but at times like this, basic principles should come into play, i'm happy with the agents decision.

I find it surprising that oil from Orkney is going to Russia, don't they have plenty of oil themselves? Do we know where this tanker is going from Orkney? Just curious I don't understand. "Russian owned" does not necessarily mean it's going to Russia.Liberian flag, recent ports have been US and UK. www.vesselfinder.com/vessels/NS-CHAMPION-IMO-9299719-MMSI-636012384The original Mail on line article said it was headed for St Petersburg

ilmoro from a quick scoot around the internet this morning (so take with a pinch of salt) it would seem that Russia have 3-5k T-80s (possibly 1500 of which are in reserves / mothballed), about 500 T-90s, and <20 T-14s.

Yes, ignore what I said, perils of answering posts in a pub distracted by football. The point I was trying to make was that the Russians largely dont appear to have deployed their better equipment, T72B3, B3M upgrades and T14, T90s likely to be the older variants as they dont have many of the latest versions.

The original Mail on line article said it was headed for St Petersburg That's what was confusing me surely Russia is swimming in oil why would they be importing from Orkney? It seems much more logical that it was headed elsewhere.

Sky news reporting that the EU are offering to give Russian made fighter jets to Ukraine.
Also, the Ukraine president has decided he would like to join the EU, and please can they have a special rule so they can join later this afternoon

It seems much more logical that it was headed elsewhere. Maybe it's a leveraged investment where they hope to sell the oil to EU for more than they paid UK for it?

Sorry I've not read the thread just dipped in for a few posts
this reuters of a few days ago got my attention
I'm thinking how do we have this intel? (i.e. that we knew(?) about the planning of the invasion before the Ukrainians and anyone else, we even seem to have maps) I'm probably putting 2 & 2 together here, but I can't quite get the idea of Putin putting down his security chief on TV(?) if that's true what's been happening in private between them
I suppose I'm implying a direct leak of info from one nation's service to another nation's service Total speculation
Found this interesting

What can anyone do if Putin threatens to Nuke anyone who helps Ukraine? A risk too far on brinkmanship for the West I would say. If Putin nukes anyone it will not be the USA, he knows what he'll get back, he will choose England being the most belligerent of the European nations as punishment. He will not go for a city, but one of our military bases, somewhere like Portsmouth Dockyard as a demonstration and then sit back and wait for America's reaction. Then we will find out who our friends really are and whether all those years of being America's poodle (that has got us where we are today) finally pays off! Sorry, just trying to think as he will do. Putin is now blaming Liz Truss for his nuclear escalation so I may be correct in putting the UK at the top of the target list for a nuke! www.express.co.uk/news/world/1572905/Ukraine-Russia-war-live-vladimir-putin-nuclear-threat-kyiv

Personally I think its been clear for weeks that the US and UK in particular, and possibly the whole "5 Eyes" group, have had an inside senior track, and possibly from multiple sources. I say 'several' only because of the risk of revealing sources when it comes to making info public, but it might be they are confident it would be difficult to trace. When it came to Crimea, Obama was advised to not release known intel upfront for fear of revealing their sources. This time round, its been pretty obvious for a while that they have high quality information and decided to release it in an attempt to thwart / undermine even ultimately in the (vain) hope of deterring Putin from proceeding. The revealing of the intent to put a puppet in place (which is turning out to be very much what Putin had in mind with a state decapitation objective); saying that false flag operations were planned; these were all made public (IMHO) so as to undermine their intended impact by way of predicting them in advance. Putin's Russia is a gangland culture. Some of the less wealthy but still in positions to know could easily have the heads turned by gold. Others might have been in a position to have been blackmailed. Yet others may have had very grave doubts about the whole escapade and were therefore doing it out of either conscience or pure self interest (knew the high risk that it could turn it a bit of s***show for them and their ilk thanks to sanctions etc).

Switzerland to adopt EU sanctions against Russia
After some soul-searching, neutral Switzerland will adopt all EU sanctions against Russia.
There will be no exceptions: five oligarchs have already been banned from entering Switzerland, the bank accounts of all 336 people on the EU’s list, including Vladimir Putin and Sergei Lavrov, will be frozen with immediate effect.
Along with Sweden supplying weapons, this is a big step for the non-aligned/neutral countries of Europe. Also I think that Finland is banning the sale of Russian vodka. Which is a big step for them as well.
